"Colorful" Black and White photographs

by Yvette Depaepe

Are black and white colors?
This is one of the most debated issues about color.
Ask a scientist and you'll get a reply based on physics: “Black is not a color, white is a color.”
Ask an artist or a child with crayons and you'll get the opposite answer: “Black is a color, white is not a color.”

As photographers we tend to fall in between those two extremes.  For us, black as well as white are definitely colors. Putting aside the cold un-emotional scientific explanation above, we can color BW pictures with the subject matter and the emotions they can evoke.

Look at these BW photos by 1x artists and feel the colors:  rich, interesting, brilliant, intense, vivid, vibrant, lively and characterful.
