What Eltz?

by Editor Wicher Bos
Published the 19th of November 2021

The other day I saw a photo of a magnificent castle on Twitter. With some help of Google it appeared to be the Eltz castle in Germany. According to Wikipedia it is still owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century, thirty-three generations ago.… From 1965 to 1992, an engraving of Eltz Castle was on the 500 Deutsche Mark note. Well, this castle is present in the incredible 1x image base too…

So, I wondered what else is there on castles, strongholds and fortresses in the 1x.com image base?
Each and every time I am amazed by what 1x hides in its image base….
This time is no exception, here is a selection of what I discovered…

KEY WORD: CASTLE

Today, not many castles are built, photographer dorus found one.
He wrote ‘due to haggling & politics this modern castle was left unfinished and standing still for 9 years now. And oh yes, they are still haggling...'

'contemporary haunting' by dorus

Or perhaps our contemporary castles are more like this:

'The architect who wants to give everyone a castle' by Hilde Ghesquiere

Hilde Ghesquiere explains: “THE RED WALL Ricardo Bofill La Muralla Roja is a postmodern apartment complex in Calpe, Spain designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill in 1968. In designing the building, Bofill referenced the architecture of North African casbahs.”

I hope you enjoyed this selection and big thanks to all photographers that made it possible…
