I'm not an old member of this website, so my question could've been answered somewhere else, but can anyone enlighten me what is the diference between the Animal category and the Wildlife one? It seems to me that they include exactly the same type of photos, so I wonder why the redundancy?

Hi,

The animals category is for pets and wild animals in captivity (zoo etc ...).

The wildlife category is for wild animals in their natural surrounding.

Hi, Luc,

That is probably the definition of the respective categories. If you take a look at the photos published in Animals, you'll see there are lots of animals there which are not pets or in captivity. So my question still stands, I guess.

Hi Christian,
you asked the difference that there should be between the two categories (animals/wildlife), and the answer that Luc gave you conforms to what you asked, at least according to the theoretical definition.
The fact that within the two categories the images do not respect what should be, well .... this is practically impossible to control and some images would always escape. These classifications are not "gospel" ... they are just a way to facilitate the identification of a certain type of photo in the great sea of all the photos published. It just takes a good dose of patience....😊

Finally, on the other hand, I absolutely agree with you that a reduction of the current categories, by grouping some of them, would be desirable and in the end it would speed up a lot the browsing and the finding photos.
I am thinking for example to "Conceptual & Creative Edit" or  "Everyday & documentary & street", categories within which the photos are often very similar and comparable, precisely because is really extremely difficult imagine and then establird sharp and definite criteria of interpretation.

Kind regards

Hello, Sergio,

That is the point of my question -  had 1x cut the redundancies, it would have made the site more browsable.  As for "some images would always escape", that "some" is an understantement - a lot of images "escape", as there is significant overlap between the content of the two categories.

Thank you for the answer. I do agree that there are other categories as well that are very similar. Also, there are some missing - for example, if I shoot flowers outdoors, in their environment, what is the category where I should put them? They are not Animals nor Wildlife nor Landscape. They are neither Still life nor Documentary. I think that unifying Animals and Wildlife into one category called Nature would make sense.
