The photographer in a fiction novel?
#OFF TOPIC

Not many books around where the hero is a photographer, so here is your chance to hopefully get another one published.

A very close friend (and a 1x member, you can probably figure it out) is trying to write a story where the main character is a photojournalist. That's the book idea.

Could the good members of 1x help get this idea to the publishing stage by voting to support this novel? There's NO obligation or commitment, the votes are just a way to show there is enough interest in the idea to take it forward and to motivate the writer to complete the novel. 1000 votes are needed, which is a mountain so any and all help, re-posting and generally spreading the idea, is desperately welcomed.

Hi, Peter,

I am a novelist ( a published one, yes, and my book was discussed in THE WRITER), and this is really not how publishing happens....he should write the novel, and, if it's good, a literary agent will take him on and try to sell it. You don't "get an idea to the publishing stage": you have the novel repped by an agent. I don't see how votes would motivate any writer to finish a book; writers are generally self-motivated. You seem like a lovely friend, but I do know the publishing world, and I just don't get this at all. A GREAT novel with a photographer as protagonist, by the way, is GLORY O'BRIEN'S HISTORY OF THE FUTURE. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but this would be like if you told me, Hey, we'll get 1,000 votes for you, and then you can take a photograph. To me, it just doesn't make sense. To others, maybe it does. Take care! :) -Terri

Hi Terri, post up a link to your novel, would love to read it! You are right of course, but the traditional literary agent option is not open to many I guess. This is an alternative crowd supporting way of getting published as once 1000 votes have been gathered, a publishing contract is then offered.

I voted. Not because you asked but because I have read the chapter and I want to know how he becomes a photojournalist after being a policeman :-). I hope he gets there.

Some years ago I read a detective (crime) story written by Leif Davidsen in 1998. Dramatis personae is Peter Lime, a paparazzo working in Spain, taking pictures of a famous politician in the course of the (inter)action with his young female lover. Full of clichés, but suspensfully written with some hints to technical aspects of such photography at that time.

I hope that no photographer suffers the faith of Peter Lime because of being at the wrong place at a wrong time☻

Hi, Peter,

Absolutely no disrespect intended to you or your friend, of course, and thank you for your kind words. I hope your friend does well...the literary agent option is open to everyone, actually; it just takes tenacity, but if this approach works for your friend, more power to him. :) :) I was just trying to provide some info in a field I'm deeply familiar with. :) I sure didn't mean to step on any toes. :)

Thanks, too, Peter, for requesting a link to my novel. I'm not allowed to do this because of my own contract and the possibility of a reprint; if you're interested, the novel is for sale on Amazon and elsewhere and is called MARIE, MARIE: HOLD ON TIGHT (the title from Eliot's The Wasteland). My book of poetry, THE CARRINGTON MONOLGUES, is for sale there, too--it was a Pulitzer Prize nominee, my tiny claim to fame. I hope your friend achieves the votes and is really happy with his decision. Bright blessings to you both.

Dear Terry! I admit that I took the information about you is not quite serious, especially about the nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. But after I read your two poems must say that I liked it, and now I am your follower in the literature. On the Internet many people write about you and a lot of praise.
You are the most pleasant surprise for me on this site! :-)
Good luck in all your activities and creativity!

I was read your poem in http://changesevenmag.com/two-poems-by-terri-brown-davidson/

Even if the translation of Google I appreciated the high quality of our poetry, then I imagine how it sounds in the prof. translation.

You are very kind...you are a very pleasant surprise for me on this site as well. I'm lucky to be surrounded by so many people, including you, dedicated to excellence and to helping others achieve greater heights. Best of luck to you, my 1x.com friend, and may your own creativity and great efforts continue to bear fruit. :)

Peter, you are a sweetheart. Sometimes I can be the bull in the china shop. I'm very happy that no toes were crushed in the trampling. :)
