Stereographic Projections
#PANORAMIC

This thread was created in order to prevent the thread ""Polar Coordinates" Images" (http://1x.com/forum/editing/1707/unread) from derailing. I would like that thread to stay focused on that tool (or similar tools from other programs)

Polar Coordinates vs. [360x180]Stereographic Projections

PC is a Photoshop filter used to transform images. While it is considered a stereographic projection, there are other photo stitching programs that may allow us to center the image on any point of the panorama rather than only limiting the possibilities to 1 point as in Photoshop. This typically requires a more complex workflow and some tools not necessarily needed to create work with Polar Coordinates. Furthermore, most stereographic projections of this nature will require a 360x180 degree panorama while Polar Coordinates can be applied to a single image.

Please discuss anything related to stereographic projections and their creation. e.g.- Stitching programs, lenses and other equipment, setup, composition, processing, website links, etc.

What is a stereographic projection?

To really delve into the mathematics and idea behind this, Wikipedia may help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereographic_projection

Otherwise a simple google search will show you: http://bit.ly/1oaGr71

Essentially this: " [In photography] The stereographic projection has been used to map spherical panoramas. This results in effects known as a "little planet" (when the center of projection is the nadir) and a "tube" (when the center of projection is the zenith)."

I am by no means the ultimate source of information on this subject. In fact, I have not yet truly gotten started myself but I am very interested in your experiences and resources you may have found helpful. This is also a great place to share and discuss our work, please do so!

I'd like to start a list of websites related to the creation of these images that may help us further learn and advance. Again, please post anything you think should be added to this list.

Hi there. No replies :) Well here's something to get you talking: http://1x.com/member/bilderreich/photos/all

Can't believe i have not found him until now. but this fellow, Markus Lissner, has one of the most impressive collections of stereographic images i have ever seen! check it out, it's certainly worth a look.

I have invited him to join the thread to share his thoughts and ideas :)
