According to a review, it's the best Macro lens tested for Nikon DSLR's! Any experience with this lens?

Hello Riad,

I don't know if it's the best macro lens at this focal length but it certainly is a top performer. The 100mm focal length is a bread and butter lens for manufacturers and optical differences between makes is minor to nonexistent.

I shoot Canon and have been on the hunt for a good used copy of the 100mm Canon L. My thinking being, used prices offer equal value when compared to a new Sigma lens. That changed this month. Sigma has discounted the lens $300 here in the US. Based on results I have seen from accomplished macro photographers, my experiences with the Sigma 180 2.8 Macro, and digesting the technical specs and reviews I headed to the local camera shop and ordered one. I should take delivery of the lens next week and will give you my preliminary thoughts then. For the price I don't think I'm going to be disappointed.

Hello William,

WOW! You seem to have amazing prices in the US! Good for you :)
The mentioned Sigma costs for example according to Sigma Germany 899 Euro equivalent to 1232.80 USD! ( just checked their site ). I read it was $699 before the discount, making it the only negative point about this lens.
Looking forward to first macro samples :) Good luck!

Hi Riad

The Sigma macro is the only non-Nikon that I use in my DSLR system, same when I was shooting Canon.

Actually preferred the 180 over the Canon 180 !! The only downside to the lens is when you sell it, will take a much bigger hit.

Presently I'm in the market for a Nikon Macro to use with the D800e and not sure what to do, will most likely go with Nikon. I like having some space between lens and subject so tend longer focal length. Looking at the 200 macro, which btw is one of the oldest if not the oldest design in their lineup.

Excellent advise from William and fully agree !!

Hi Riad,

I have got this lens for two years ago, and the only "but" who I can see is the stabilizer mode. It´s a little bit slow and do it a few noise, but the image quality are perfect for my Eos 7D. and the best is that you can use with teleconverter 1,4x and don´t lose the AF

Hi Miguel,

Thanks a lot for your input. It really seems like the Sigma lens is a very good choice despite of the quite high price for a macro lens. I have never thought of using a TC with a macro lens, but surely will give it a try!

Hi William,

Thanks a lot for a great job sharing your photos with an intense info input .
I think a macro lens can never be too sharp, and I am very happy the lens turned out this way.
Wish you a great time with your new lens, and lots more of great photos hopefully to share with us!
