Hi Phyllis,

Happy New Year ! I just joined 1x on the recommendation of one of my friends. I am basically a portrait photographer. That is why I have joined this group but am still learning the ropes as to how this functions. How many Photographs can you post at one time and are they first screened before they are in your gallery. Thanks for your participation.

This has not been an active group for some time now. So it is good to see your postings.

Feel free to commment on other posts you see, yet, keep it postive.

If you would like a critique these are not usually offered within the groups since we actually have a critique section. I highly recommend going there if you would like more feedback on your photo...it is well worth the time.

I would say at this point that posting about three at a time seems reasonable. Sometimes when we post too many people tend not to look at them all. Maybe you want to space them out by a day or so?

You can place photos in your own gallery anytime you wish and no screening is required.

Sometime ago, this pal, while in the meat street of Baalbek, pokes me on the shoulder a few times really hyped-up, asking for a portrait. Only that he could just make certain sounds, for his tongue has been cut off. This is the first shot from the very few I took, whats so captivating is when you capture the moment between the excitement and what lays beneath. All this pain yet joy he expressed was truly inspiring and somewhat enlightening.

Hello Phyllis,

This is by far the best landscape shot I have capture in the 11 years now as a photographer and film maker. I recently visited Spiti Valley and its ancient meditative and naturally heavenly landscapes, and hiked up at around 5400 meters to reach one of the most ancient caves for yogis in a tiny village owned by the same family for almost 3000 years now. They are keepers of the last lineage of the BonPo Pagan Shamanism, ayurvedic teaching, botanics and so much yoga's. A truly transformational moment life when embraced by the himalayan spiti valley, which is home to the oldest still living pagan tradition. According to this tradition, we are dictated by the passion towards unity and life, projected through our own will, and each and every element with this planet is embodied by one being, it said that we are collectively shaping reality in the imagination of earth, and everything becomes possible when the basic understanding of nature is practiced. They worship only the stars and mountains, the animals, the trees, and each other. Welcome to the dreamtime they said!

I normally won't critique in the forum, however, since you've asked for one...... :)

Please remember that our opinions/critiques are just that - they are "ours". Sometimes it's hard for the viewer to appreciate what the photographer is trying to relay, so we critique on what we see, feel and how it makes us feel.

I like what you've tried to do here and it definitely has the potential to be a strong image, with just a few little tweaks.

The first thing I noticed were the blinds on the left hand side - they are black and boxy looking and my eye keeps going to them. You could either move your subject away from the blinds, or perhaps pull the blinds down so you would just see the slats as opposed to the slats all bunched up, making the black box appearance I'm talking about. The next thing my eye goes to the man's nose hair. (Being a woman - that's one of the first things we see on a man). LOL A quick dab with the clone tool would take care of that. I don't mind the blurred hand so much, because it's quite evident that it is a hand, but it wasn't for a moment or two before I even noticed the cigarette. Since this is a smoking portrait, I feel having the cigarette in focus is just as important as having the smoke in focus.

I hope my opinions/critique is useful?

I was mesmerized by this man's portrait and then felt so sad when I read his tongue had been cut off? I'm afraid to ask the circumstances surrounding that!

Piercing gaze with the photographer - makes such a powerful portrait! Tremendous detail in the beard and skin - truly an amazing portrait!

You can usually learn this information by going to the main page of any group and look under settings (which is one of the menu items). You can also find it when you upload a photo a group...A screen usually pops up an tells you about the group and the guidelines for that group..

Try it with this group now and see if you can understand

There is currently no group manager for this group. There may be at some future time but not at present.

Since there is no group manager here I am going to say that between two and three photos a week seems reasonable.

Try to take the time to talk to each other. If you want people to look at your pictures the best way to do this is to look at theirs and comment.

Even before I read your post Stephan I thought this was someone who could be at Venice Beach. :)

I like the photo very much in terms of your subject and the composition. It has a very abstract feeling to it which I find appealing.

It is hard to tell, but the part in te background that is blurred at the bottom...are those waves from the Ocean?

He seems like a cool character and b/w does him justice in this shot.

The subject is Emma. I have been shooting images of her off and on for about fie years.

I have wanted an image, a portrait, where she commands center stage. no separation between Emma, the camera, the photographer and the viewer. no limits of space and time. This image is as close, for me, as i have come in this experiment.

As I was looking around with my camera and the model was busy, I found this one spot with amazing light. I asked the model to come to me and just stand around where she stands. The colors are retouched, but the light was great.

The Weekly Theme next week (the idea is "Frames") started me thinking about what it means to wear glasses. Do glasses define who you are somewhat in terms of identity as well as in appearance? Hi Dimitry,

I find your photo quite remarkable, and I can add it has some quality of being a bit different.

I am not seeing the concept as you presented it...and I hope that is okay because I do see something powerful.

The position of the woman's body, can be interpreted in many ways. However, the tree she is standing up against looks to me like the shape of a leg.I am not sure if this was intentional..but it truly stands out for me.. Then when I see two people coming toward her and presented in a dark setting, I get the feeling...she might be in danger...Of what ? It is hard to say...but for sure with the shape of the female leg the danger might relate to something women fear.

I find this to be a very thought provoking image. Thanks for sharing it.

Inspired by a question about my old (portrait) photographs i went up to the attic yesterday and opened a long closed box with 35mm and 4x5 inch negatives.

I took this image with my 4x5 inch Sinar camera. For lighting i used a few old studio lamps (they were old then as well ...). I really liked using lamps because i could see what i was doing.

Hello,

A family passed in front of my camera just as I set up for a shot of lions at a zoo. I captured this image as one woman stopped in front of me, watching the lions. Her eyes told the story...smiling as nature unfolded close by.

My latest Street Portrait.

Walking around in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia, looking for interesting subjects to photograph i saw this man working hard on the engine of this enormous truck. The temperature was in the thirties (Celsius), middle of the day, 2.08 pm.

We didn't really talk but i did ask to take his portrait. He only nodded his head once, glance up, gave me his broadest smile for an instant and continued working on the engine.

I thanked him and walked on, sure i'd taken an interesting portrait.

Greetings,

I was shooting landscape images at the beach during sunset today when a bride and groom stepped up on the rock cliff above me. Their photographer was taking pictures. I saw their silhouette against the bright sunset in the background, so I took my camera off the tripod and shot some images like this one. I then went up the cliff and offered my images to the bride, groom and photographer as a gift. They gladly accepted. What an amazing day.

I have shied away from portraits, I think because of the vulnerability involved. This guy's name is Vitorino Salomé, singer and composer. He is one of the most famous artists in Portugal. I'm a professional musician, as well as a professional photographer. I played a lot of concerts with Vitorino and, as we were playing, at the time I took this photo, near his home town, he invited me to visit his ranch, where he has a lot of iberian donkeys, one animal wich is in risk of disapearing from Portugal and Spain. His male donkey's names are the same of well known politicians and the females have the names of well known women faces from portuguese TV bullshit shows. I laughed a lot when he started calling the donkeys by their names.

The photo was taken with a Pentax 67, 200mm lens and Ilford HP5+

This a drummer at Saint Croix's Caribbean Dance Company & School. I love this photo. I gentlemen sat down on a local bench with the light hitting his left shoulder. I positioned the lens, so it was at his eye level and gave him instructions to look right into the camera. The details in his face, the beard and the kind eyes, I knew I had a beautiful picture.

Greetings all,

Here are a few pictures from the Victorian Christmas event that is happening now in my home town of Nevada City, California. Many people dress in clothes that are reminiscent of holiday seasons of old. There are also many musicians of all ages, food, and drink. We came across a blacksmith shop on our way home from a photo shoot in Lake Tahoe and decided to stop and go inside. This happy blacksmith greeted us at the door. We talked for quite a while and then we asked if he would pose for some pictures. He agreed. This is my favorite because he took off his glasses for this pose. This is Loren, an 83 year old blacksmith. What a gem.

I liked the way this gentleman was looking up into the direction of the light outside of an old bar. He was dressed as Doc Holliday, known for his gun slinger, poker playing lifestyle and was a participant in the infamous shootout at the OK Coral. The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a 30-second shootout between lawmen and members of a loosely organized group of outlaws called the Cowboys that took place on October 26, 1881, in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. It is generally regarded as the most famous shootout in the history of the American Wild West.

My contribution

"Misaligned"

We all develop a particular persona for how we want a particular group of people or an individual to see us. One for our loved ones; one for our co-workers; one for our friends; and, one for strangers. Each persona is constructed with different layers of our true self and how we want to be viewed. Constantly changing, sometimes these layers of truth and fabrication just don't line up quite like we expected. Perhaps that's when we reveal our true selves. After all, we are a mixture of contradictions, inconsistencies, insecurities and emotions; the things that make us human.
