How I made ..... A Tutorial
#CREATIVE EDIT

Hi all,

i was always thankful to find some web tutorials, to improve my skills within a usefull workflow. There are so many different ways to get a satisfying result and this is because it's almost difficult to find your own way.

Many people asked me, what software i use and how i manage my workflow. So, i decided to try making a tutorial, that others are able to comprehend each single step during my workflow.

For many of you, it will be nothing new of course, but perhaps for the one or other it could be an interesting journey.

The used software is ACDSee Pro 6 and Nikon View NX2 for converting NEF into TIFF and JPEG.

This is a colour picture, that i converted into B/W:

Hope, you enjoy it.

Hi Michael
Thank you very much for your informative tutorial. I don't use ADCsee and I wonder what your raw-editings are. Do you convert in ViewNX2 without processing to TIFF and in this case, why don't you use ACDsee's raw editor?

Hi Thomas

First of all, i convert my NEF files into 16-bit TIFF's by using Nikon View NX2. Why? Well: all external RAW editors are not able to decode the RAW files completely. The reason is simple: manufacturers like Nikon or Canon are using their own RAW codes and they don't supply their complete codes to external software developper. The results when developping RAW's directly in an external convertor are not amusing. Image quality, distortion, chromatic abberations etc. are not equally handled like they are when using the manufacturers own RAW editor.

I made some tests with different cameras and different external editors (Lightroom, ACR, Capture One, DXO ......) in the past and i came to the conclusion, that any RAW files should be converted in the original editor. After this, i can use these TIFF's as the basic to work on.

Did you try Capture NX2, Nikon's own converter which is indeed (beside ViewNX2) the only raw editor capable of reading all NEF codes, but offers a lot of editing tools and is currently available for CHF 175.--? Personally, I do most editing in Capture NX2, and I particularey like the embedded U-point technology provided by Nik software.

Did you try Capture NX2,

Yes, i tried it several times and, no doubt, it's a really pleasant software. What i don't like as much is the lightgrey theme (i prefer dark grey) and the kind of operating. But this is only my personal opinion and perhaps one day, i will try it one more time.

What i love on ACDSee Pro is the fact, that it is manager, viewer and editor in one program.
