Hey everyone,

 

Relatively new member of 1X (since last week) and brand new member of the B&W group, I wanted to post this shot with you guys.

 

This is a shot of the iconic chandeliers in Vanderbilt Hall, in Grand Central Station, famous to millions around the world.

 

The shot was taken as I was starting in photography about two years ago now. Seen as I didn't have my tripod with me, I increased the ISO to 1600 to make up for the lack of IS on my 16-35mm, the only somewhat mid range lens (cropped sensor rebel t2i) I had at the time.

Carriage in winter storm

 

Carriage in a heavy winter storm in the city Groningen in the Netherlands. I made this picture when I was capturing a wedding. We (the wedding couple, the quest and myself) where all hiding for this heavy winter storm in a cafe. I saw the wedding carriage was leaving and I quickly opened a window in the cafe and was just in time to capture this moment.

Hi to you all

this image is made in the suburb of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, this building is known as "white building", and in google is possible to read about his story, It is located in a suburd area of this asian capital, outside is absolutely not inviting, but once inside I realized the total absence of dangers and I was astonished by the friendly mood of inhabitants, inside it could be considered as a real microcosmos, the poverty reigns but people has'nt lost the will to smile and be happy.

I was looking for a lonely sensation using the minimum digital postprocessing and so many on scenario work as I could.

This shot is about the morning silence of a russian village. The water of this little lake is so quiet, that everything is reflecting in it like in a mirror. It seems that all the world is sleeping at this moment... But we see that a young woman with a bucket came to the lake shore to take some water, so it's not a mirage, it's a real moment of the human life. But what does she dip out from the lake, maybe water or maybe it's a slice of heaven, fallen into the lake?

A gentleman is caught studying perplexing documents at tax time. The photographer is caught in the reflection of the plate glass. Attempt 2 to capture these beautiful structures at Lepe (Hampshire, UK). From there the forces of the Allies departed for Normandy in WW II (www.newforestheritage.org/d-day-at-lepe-beach/). The area is full of old structures and the one shown here is one of two remnants of a jetty used to load troops to the boats.

This was a fresh snowfall in spring, something I was hoping for while I was hiking out there for a few days. This mountain has always fascinated me since my first trip to the region 25 years ago. In a "French" Cafe just outside the Rice University campus, I saw an intense gentleman reading a book. I thought the ambiance of the Cafe and the man would make an interesting Street Photo. But he is so intense, I thought ... what is he reading about? ... war? ... inhumanity? ... injustice? When I down loaded the photo, I realized that the story of the image was the man and the book, which I hope explains the tight crop.

It was my first nude studio session. It was also her first nude session ever so at first she was a little shy. I thought that I can use her shyness as a leitmotif of the photo. The idea was to show the delicate beauty of her body but without showing too much of it. The appropriate setting of the studio lamp and the position of the model was also designed to light up her full, firm breasts but also to bring out the delicate line of her back.

I did a strobe workshop in the style of Jean=Loup Sieff "Torses Nus". The lighting setup was impeccable, and the model was very expressive. That combined into a series of great shots. I chose this one because it has an intimate mood and it's very feminine.

She is 15 years old dog granny and she is really nice dog with amazing character. Still leader of the pack.

Going to the beach

 

Mother takes her little boy to the beach in Biarritz in France. I liked the lines of the white fencing and the shadows, and made the picture just before the Mother and Son walked in the shadows. This is an older picture, shot on film, and scanned afterwards. I did little to none editing in Photoshop.

This photo was taken on the streets of Larabanga in Northern Ghana, in the shadows of the ancient Sahelian mosque (one of the oldest in Western Afrika). The photo was taken in a bright sunlight with two circular ND filters stacked: One 10 stop and one 3 stop. With the help of some wind, it made it possible to smear the clouds and get the effect I was after. I hope you will like it!

The Chilehaus (Chile House) is a ten-story office building in Hamburg, Germany. It is located in the Kontorhausviertel. It is an exceptional example of the 1920s Brick Expressionism style of architecture. This large angular building is located on a site of approximately 6,000m², spanning the Fischertwiete Street in Hamburg. It was designed by the German architect Fritz Höger and finished in 1924.

"Girl with the camera"

 

The photo was taken during my second studio photo session. It was one of our last photos for that day. I gave my model an old Zenith camera and ask her to pose like she was doing a photo of me because I wanted to include some self-reflexive element in this photo. Thanks to the high ISO I've come with the grainy texture of the photo – it was made as a contrary to the contemporary trend of excessive softening of photos and make them look abnormal. I also wanted to show a beauty of female body and give viewers the opportunity to "sense" the photo, thanks to the grainy texture. The choice of giving her Zenith camera was to help the photo to look like made in the old, non-digital, "anagloue" style.

The power of the ocean is immense. This is a concrete pool on the beach being slammed by waves during high tide. This pool was built during the early 1900's and fills with water during high tide. The sun warms the water for sunbathers during low tide.

This morning it was raining, so I thought it wasn't a good day for biking, as I usually do on Sundays. Therefore I have decided to go for "photo hunting", but to be honest with no many hopes. Luckily, there are bikers that do not stop against the rain.

This shot was very improvised: I was actually driving my car, when I have seen this beautiful lady and her skirt, fighting against the elements. I immediately thought that it could had been an interesting photo...but: first I had to be faster than her, on a single lane road were the speed limit is 30 kms per hour; then finding where to stop without blocking the street; then opening the backpack, then grabbing the camera, while opening the car window. Pointing the camera without even looking back if she was arriving, to avoid losing time (seconds); guessing the best exposure and shot!

 

All, in probably less than 20 seconds. And that's the result.

One of our favorite places to hike and enjoy nature is the trail that surrounds Lake Fulmor in the San Bernardino National Forest. This bridge spans the small stream that feeds the lake. I liked the shadows and lines in this image. I originally edited this in color, but it was suggested that I explore a B&W version. This is the result.

I have already published this concept, but I probably didn't convey it opportunely. I find interesting the harmonious curves and shapes that these shirts randomly design when crowded together. Therefore to better share the visual pleasure I see, I have decided this time to make it in black and white, so to avoid the distraction of the colors; then I have added some vignetting as well, just to better give the feeling that we are inside a wardrobe...and that beauty can be found in unexpected places.

My intention was to highlight somehow the greatness of the mother nature, just how small we are to it. Thought black and while is the ideal platform for this kind of work. Some challenges I faced:

 

1. I was not really sure exactly what composition should I use for the sea and the model to perfectly realize my intention. I thought of the model standing right in front of the water but then I moved to this position!

 

2. I could not figure out whether my model was too close to the camera, or she should have been in the water against the waves!

 

3. Was the cloudy environment and the rays ideal for my theme?

 

I'd really appreciate your comments/thoughts/critiques.

A work that i have done with a make up artist, tried to give my model some aggressive look with the black and white to focus more on her lit side.

The main challenge was the light, so i used here 4 lights, main light was a big soft box 80X120 cm camera left, another one camera left but on low power, a small speedlite aimed for the background and a small soft box for hair light on low power too.

On our way from Denham to Perth and on to Busselton to participate in an Ironman triathlon we passed these amazing sand dunes near Cervantes.

Fantastic early morning light. I tried to capture the light and shadow play of the sun and clouds on the dunes.

I didn't expect to see sand dunes here so it was an added bonus to stumble upon one of the most beautiful places i have ever been!

Above the best is a title of the Army's Aviation Regiment song. The song tells a story of army aviators flying above the best Soldiers in the world. While waiting for my ride, this Blackhawk UH-60 decided to drop by and say hello. Lucky for us, they decided to give us a ride to our destination. I am thankful for their hospitality, because minutes after they departed the base New Kabul Compound (NKC), it was attacked. Several US, Afghanistan, and UN Soldiers were injured.

 

I like the Black and White because it gives the audience a antique feel to it. Looks like a photo from the Vietnam area. Unfortunately I could not take a photo of the flight line, and would have loved to be right underneath it while it landed. The sky is clear, simply because it wasn't rainy season.

My interpretation of an otherwise hot busy environment, and the theatrical stage it could well be. It is the worlds largest, oldest and most accurate sundial. It is both a view into the past, as well as being in the present moment.

The main idea is to flatten a 3d object, the stairs, and treat them as a plane, while the human subject should retain his multi-planar characterization. The image is framed by two white walls, that also lose their depth.

 

Researching the human-architecture relation, one of the first point i felt the urge to make was that the human being, although often perceived so small and harmless in relation to the bigness (as intended by R. Koolhaas) and the inhumanly dimensioned spaces in which he lives, is still the center: the main subject.

On my way driving home i thought of making this abstract image from a photograph i made of a Calatrava bridge earlier this week. I wanted to have the cables and structure 'free floating' in air to make it more surreal.

I processed the photo in Photoshop CC 2014, further enhanced it in Siver Efex Pro 2, then back again to Photoshop to finish the details.

Dark Queen..

One of a series of shots, the background was shot in an old fortress in Jbeil Lebanon, the model in my studio, the idea was to represent the power of a dark queen even if she was chained, her effect will still go beyond the chains.

Made the cracking effect in Photoshop using a brush, and added the dress flowing on the stairs to give more power to her.

This is one of my favourite photos :-)

I like that there is no sense of scale and the moving sand added a magical shimmer to the whole scene which is even more apparent in the B&W conversion compared to the colour original. Apart from the B&W conversion and exposure adjustments (incl. black and white sliders) for the whole photo and some special areas no further processing was done.

 

l think all those small structures of a sand dune can look like creatures. Here I could see a dragon hidden under a shimmering blanket of sand...slowly rising as he was being disturbed by a sand creature walking along his back...

It was taken on a very foggy morning at the river Gudenaa and to me it felt as if I could see Avalon in the mist and the birds taking messages back and forth and I hears the sound of Excalibur being forged...all about imagination ;-)

 

Not much processing was necessary as the mist already did most of the work ;-)

I converted the original in SilverEfex with high a higher contrast and then did some adjustments with regards to highlighting the bottom left slightly further in Lightroom.

In my town, Lleida, there is a wonderful Gothic cloister, the biggest in Europe. It has always fascinated me for the shadow play you could photograph. I wished to show the different forms and shapes the shadows can take depending on the light. I felt amazed with the shadow that appears on the pic because it seemed a flower waiting to rest, just trying to rest its head on the ground. Obviously, the choice in black and white for me gives a more suggestive and mysterious image.

My picture was made in a very beautiful lake near where I live a month ago. I have a fascination for long exposure pictures and still waters. With the image of two boats bound with a small chain I wished to convey a metaphor for love, how somehow you are chained to the person you love and at the same time you can move and also be apart. If both boats were to be put without unchaining them into water, they wouldn't sink and even though they would be separate entities, there would be always something to keep them close. Regarding my choice of black and white, it changes the completely the atmosphere of the picture, it makes it appear more conceptual perhaps, more subtle.

In front of such greatness and power of nature you feel really small.

I chose a conversion black and white, due to weather conditions but above all because I would like to enhance the feeling of drama that I have felt in front of such majesty.

I took this shot trying a Kodak Tri-X 400 film and got very good results developing with D-76.

I adjusted levels and curves on PS to enhance contrast and deep shadows.

I'm really happy with results!

Me and my family was traveled with a steamtrain on an old museum railway. When we was waiting for the train to leave the station I went out and find this composition through the window on my wife and my daughter. I liked it and took a shot, thats all.
