Google just sent me an email telling me my purchase of the Nik Collection will be refunded, and I downloaded it to another computer and it was free.

I've read it yesterday on G+ ....using the Nik Collection since 98, and paid 150$ back into Spring 2013...it's the Industry Standard like Photoshop since then, and much better than all -sorry- shitty Copycatz from Topazlabs, On1 & others...
even their Plugins are good, but On1 Programs are usually painfully slow, even on fast machines, and Topaz...well, B&W Effects is good, but i'm way fine since v1.0 with NikSilverEfex Pro...much better for my needs & Taste, great U-Point Tech, too...and only Tonality, which isn't avialable for Windows Machines, but OSX only, is better a bit then SilverEfex.

Check out YT, they're 100s of Tutorial Videos.

The downside to the free usage is no more updates ! Looks like this is the end of Nik

I am hoping someone will pick up the program and keep developing for a fee. Tim Gray had a good explanation to what was going on.

Hey Al, could you point me to Tim Gray's explanation?

I do have a problem in Silver Efex. In some of the filters there a rectangular boxes of distorted pixels along the edges. I thought it might be a problem during the download and installation but I redownloaded it and the problem still exists.

Thanks Thomas !!!

Seems logical for someone to pick up Nik?

Think the problem is being able to sell updates, program has gotten so good has to be a significant improvement to update. Same as PhotoShop, they had to go subscription. Interesting dilemma.

Well, download for free is not open source (yet). E.g. Lightzone, a very good RAW converter was made open source a few years ago by its owner when he was hired by a software company (Adobe), and a few guys took over and offer it now for free

Hope that Google continue with the Collection or will make it open source

Nik Google Collection should just go the OpenSource Route via Google, therefore skilled coders could enhance the Plugins, adding Enhancements, and also match the Nik Plugins for newer iterations of current Photo Editors.

They should learn from what happened with LightZone...it's also free, and OpenSource sind some couple years...

Since 98, i've said this many times....Nik Software was founded into Germany, Hamburg, into 1995. But when i've learned a lesson..never argue with many people on DPR Forum...it simply isn't worth it...

What are you attributing to the German origin?

Just because it's a great Software, i am german too, and proud it started all here - in Hamburg with Nils Kokemohr into 1995. Is that a problem for you?!

Hi Marc,
Hope you are well.

I am curious about the origin of Nik. I never found the software until it was introduced here in the States. It seems you had it long before we did.

We had a member here who told me ages ago that he knew one of the two founders in San Diego. This was after I told him how much I loved the software.

Going back in time now and I cannot recall what year it was...I would have to look for the receipts...each part was offered separately. Color effex was a larger program and you could buy it in various quantifies of filters. I bought the largest one and the cost was astronomical. I paid about $300.00 just for that set of filters. Define and Sharpener were less expensive and I eventually bought those.

Then came Silver Effex and that cost was about $200.00. Of course there were updates to Color Effex by then and they were not inexpensive either. I remember Viveza came after and I got that one also...and it was the only program they offered that I did not think was worth it. Then the HDR came out and I got that one also.

One of the greatest selling points of these filters was that they were fully functional for I believe 30 days. This gave the buyer the opportunity to use it and in doing so one found out pretty quickly how professional it was.

As you can tell by now I never bought a bundle as I kept buying each program separately. I was never disappointed. I thought and still believe that their software was the best of what was available on the market. I have not been disappointed...but over the years I would say I spent over a thousand dollars these filters.

When Google purchased them I was surprised. Looking back now I can only guess that they received a substantial sum of money and it was worth it for the owners to sell. Google did give us the Analogue filters and updates which were free. So I can't complain.

The only potential issue I see now is whether or not the filters will operate on future OS from Mac and Windows. I am hoping so - especially for Sliver Effex. The u point technology is fantastic and I would hate to lose that.

That they would originated in Germany does not surprise me at all. German products generally IMHO have always been outstanding.

Somehow this man you mention got to San Diego and however that happened I am grateful.

For those of you who paid $150.00 for all these products and have been able to use them for years now - you got yourself a very good deal. For those of you who have them only now for free....well...even if you can a year or two from them, you will not be disappointed. Just enjoy them all!

Marc, thanks for the info.

My best,
Phyllis

Thank you very much for your thoughts here, Phyllis. Well appreciated. I do love the Nik Software Plugins for such a long time....and since Google bought it, it became really affordable....sad thing only is for now - i think their would no further development anyway more...

best wishes,
marc

Phyllis,
You have such a great memory ....:-)
I'm a fan of Nik filters, like most of us. I use Silver Effex, Color Effex (mostly for contrast management), DFine and when it's got to be really weird Analog Effex.

I acquired the full set about a year and a half ago when I started photographing again and I found it was a very useful complement to Lightroom.

I hope someone will pursue the development of these programs. I work on Mac and Adobe CC. If Nik becomes incompatible with one of these I will consider MacPhun software. They are really good in black & white conversion.

Greets,

Luc
