better than what?

What do you have and what would you expect to get with the new lens that you can't get with what you have? I think this is the simple question that one needs to answer when considering buying some piece of gear.

some say, you shouldn't buy it for crop sensor body's because its a full frame lens and instead opt for the 17-55 EF-S lens because that is designed for crop sensor body's, other say 17-40mm is a better buy because you only use the best part of the glass on a crop sensor body, i have a 60d, chose it over the 7d because of price and the soft focus problem on the 7d and also im not a sport or wildlife shooter so i would not be benefiting.

I am always surprised when people ask for opinions about a given lens without saying what they already own, what they shoot, what problems they encounter with it and how they think the new lens will solve that.

So, my question again: what do you have and what would you expect to get with the new lens that you can't get with what you have?

i have a canon 60d, i have no other lenses other than the 17-40mm F/4 USM L Series, and i like to shoot landscapes. I think this lens will give me crisp images, its light to travel with and its weather sealed when attached with a filter.

Oh ok, I thought you were looking into buying one. Sorry, didn't understand that you already had it.
Let us know then what you think of it! :)

If you ever feel the need for a wider lens for landscapes there are some options in the 8-24mm range for your 60d.

well it seems to me that it is a very crisp lens, although it doesn't stop down to F/2.8 and has no images stabilization, i always use a tripod for my landscapes so that isn't a problem for me anyways. The lens doesn't distort much at its widest angle which is a plus! but i'm concerned that when i upgrade to the 5D Mark III that the edges will become soft and the lens wont be as crisp, i need to buy EF lenses as i upgrading soon.

Craig,
I used the 17-40 /4 L on the 40D and was very pleased with the image quality. When upgrading to 5DII I was no longer satisfied because of the quality in combination with large sensor , changed to 16-35 /2,8 L. This would give you the better performance when you think of going to the 5DIII

Thankyou Michael i have taken your advice on board, i have heard rumors of soft corners when going to a larger sensor this is why i was concerned, i do like the 24-70mm F.2.8 but its a bit to tele-photo for wide angle landscapes.

It would only make sense to me, if you plan into the future to change your
Canon body to a FF body....otherwise -yet- you must multiply the 17-40mm
lens with x1.6 on your Canon Crop (APS-C) body, because the canon APS-C
is sth smaller than Nikon's DX format (1.5 Cropfactor).

I have tried canon`s 24-70 last weekend and i was surprised by the superb quality. Sure that one cannot compared with Nikons 24-70 but an excellent allrounder even for landscaper!

I'd say before i'd go fullframe, i'll buy the new sigma 18-35/1.8, lenses
are more important than DSLR bodies.
