Thank's for this Black & White Forum, but I still miss a Black & White Categorie.

So I must upload my Black & White photography to Everyday, Conceptual, Mood or Creative edit Categories...

Hi Wolf,

From my experience from 500px, a B&W category is very useful when you don't know where to send your picture... Often I wonder if my picture is a "street photograph" a "mood photograph"... not to speak about "everyday" which I still haven't figured what it really means!

That being said, I'm glad 1x doesn't have a b&w category because it doesn't really make sense... B&W is not a category or a genre, it's just a technical choice. If we had a B&W category we should also have an HDR, a X-processed and why not a lensbaby, a holga, and then also formats: a square, a panorama... etc. It'd be a mess!

I think it's more important to filter by genres like portrait, landscape... etc rather than technical choices like coulour, format or other processing choices.

My 2cents.

Have a nice week-end,
paco.

Yes, this matter of categories is a bit difficult.

If there were a B&W category, there would all sorts of photos in it.

In my humble opinion, the only use of categories is when you look for something very special, then it's a way of narrowing your search.

I like the landscape category for instance, because I like watching the photos of some excellent landscape photographers on the site, it is a source of inspiration :-)

Thank you very much for your response.

I still think that B&W a category. B&W photography means to see a scene as a filtered color separation. Maybe some photographers use the simple photoshop conversion 'grayscale' to convert color images to B&W, but the result is most of the time a very poor grayscale image and not a optimized B&W photograph.

B&W is a art form and doesn't matter if it's a portrait, landscape or fine art nude. I'm very happy about this Black & White Forum that show a lot of great pictures.

Marie-Claude you are right, it is difficult to decide, but b/w and color has a own mood and right. B/W should be in style like the old movies or photographies.

Sometime I change photographies in b/w, if mostly the object are black and so I can make the scene or style more extremly.

I hope that they install a b/w category!

I understand whet you mean Ikka, all the more I like B&W a lot and very often convert my files to B&W to change the mood or impact, i especially love &W for mountains, I think it adds to their majesty. Besides I always am far more careful and spend far more time when post processing B&W pictures than color ones.
I agree, a B&W category could be interesting, But i think, we should then choose a sub-category too, such as B&W : landscape, B&W: Creative edit and so on.
Mind you, at the moment I'm using an old laptop, (my computer being on repair) and I sometimes have got the feeling all the photos are greyscale ;-)))

Marie-Claude, yes also by your old computer or laptop, it is really worth, you should calibrating your monitor and printer, yes it is a lot of work to create a good work.

No I don't to build sub-categories: it is really a hard choice to differ the images.

Hi Ikka,
Thanks for your advice about calibration but I'm afraid it's not worth on this machine, so many issues with it....
I'll get my iMac by the end of next week ;-)

It's great to find that topic. When I came to 1X the first thing that I noticed was that there is no B&W category. I really like that fact, since this category is one of the (very few) things that I don't like on 500px. In my opinion black and white – like HDR, color, process colors, toned images, sepia, duotone .... – is just an image style. Whether the choice is made through inserting a film, using a b&w digiback or simply the decision to post produce an image that way. It's a tool for expressing something with a picture, but not a category itself. At least that's what I think and why I am glad that it is not here.

When it comes to finding those pictures it would be a great asset to provide the image style in a separate, optional select box. Could be a nice feature, and in one way or another very dominant on the (micro)stock websites.

yes, at moment you have to do so; and why not, because a b/w theme has also own opinions: like movie, like objects and so on.
As I told before, I would apreciating myself, if I will find in future this b/w category.
As others told also, that it would be a sub-category of issue.

..as you do so at moment like me, sometimes needs things time and you have to fight for something in your life.
cheers Ikka
