The Chase

Hello, thanks for taking time to critique my work. I enjoy photographing nature and I am trying to experiment with different techniques. Always for me when photographing nature, I want the viewer to see the beauty and conectedness to the world I feel when I let myself be immersed in nature. I have Photoshop 2022 and Topaz DeNoise AI. I am self-taught in Ps and realize there are unlimited possibilities when processing images. My goal for now is to create some aesthetic images with minimal processing. I am experimenting with using a gimbal head to shoot birds, especially in flight with a telephoto lens (500mm) with very slow shutter speeds. Because there are so many variables to taking this style photo I wanted your thoughts if it is technique worthy of pursuing and opinions on the varying degree of how much the subject should be sharp or blured. Here is my version, I cropped, did a slight level adjustment layer and used DeNoise with some slight dodge and burn edits.

1/30sec   f/29   Iso250

Ps on a separate issue it would be nice if it would be possible to cut and paste in this section from a Word document. It only seems you can paste a link here not written text. (Just a thought)

Thanks again,

Jon

Hi Jon welcome to Critique and thank you for sharing this fine offering. - Yes it would be nice to cut and paste but we have what we have. - Looking at your image i think you have made a great start on a very hard road so give yourself a pat on the back. - With this type of work we all see things differently so stick to you guns and work on your own syle and see what you come up with - What we do here is try and get the photographer to take a fresh look at their work and add a few ideas  -

That said I have had your image back into Photoshop just to see what I could come up with. - I took a bite out of the top image and straighten up and used Fill / Content Aware to fill in the space I added I thought this would help composition - Next I used Topaz AI Sharpen to sharpen the birds only This is my view of your fine image thank you for sharing...

Hello, Jon
Welcome to our forum. I agree with my friend David, in that you should pursue your ideas. We need experimenting to find new inspiration. In this image I especially like the blur around the body and in the wings. It's a dynamic image. I could advise you to increase the contrast some more, and lighting the shadows in the birds body. I think this little change would favor the image. By the way I like your cropped version. Have good light. Cicek Kiral S c...

HelloJon W Wallach ,

i applaud your efforts to try out new techniques. I like the suggestions made by Daniel Stinray, Personnally, i would opt for a 16x9 format to not have so much negative space all around the birds. And I think it would emphasize the direction of the movement more.

Also, when doing bird in flight panning, you should aim to have at least the face and the eye area in focus, which is not the case here. It takes practice to achieve that. Keep it up!
Thanks. Lucie

Thanks everyone for taking the time to cretique my image.  It is nice getting specifics on how to improve my image as well as the encouragement to continue experimenting with new ideas.
