Camera : iphone 15 promax

focal length: 14 mm

Hello, I have taken a photo at a shopping mall, and found the spiral shape on the top is great. The original picture with the parameters are shown below (fig 1).

Camera : iphone 15 promax

focal length: 14 mm

I want to emphasize the spiral as the topic, so have used processing tools of lightroom and photoshop (crop and rotate slightly, B&W, exposure +0.78, highlights -16, shadows +1, dehaze -6, contrast -1), then the image becomes fig 2:

Then, I have tried two means to emphasize the topic, one is rotate 180 degree, forming fig 3:

Another way is to use photoshop, copy the image as new layer and rotate 180 degree, and then blend two layers, forming fig 4.

But I think the photo is still not so attractive. What do you think about my various attempts to emphasize the spiral shape? Can you give me some advice for further improvement?

Hello Yufeng,

Thank you for sending the photo and its changes to this forum.

From my perspective, the first proposal in black and white appeals to me the most. The original is a bit too monotonous and your proposal to change the frame and color of the photo is justified. Maybe I would add a little contrast, but so that the details do not escape (it is best to use masks for the light and dark parts of the photo using PSCC 2025).

Hello Yufeng

Thank you for sharing your Spiral photo with us. It's well composed and works beautifully in black and white. I chose to work on the last photo (at the bottom) because I like the way we see the spiral in both the upper and lower frame. I have increased the definition and the light, trying to bring out the details of the staircase as well as the reflections in the floor.

Good light, Elizabeth

Dear Slawomir and Elizabeth,

Thank you for your advice and appreciating of my work! In fact, this is my first experience of posting pictures and discussing with photographers in 1x.com. I was glad when seeing your comments. Interestingly, I have just made other imporovements to bring the spiral shape out:

  • remove the electric lights and some items on the top or the ground
  • just rotate the spiral shape part and then blend with the ground
  • use path blur for the middle part

Then the image becomes:

Personally, I think it's more concise, though have used too much post-processing technology..

Yufeng,

Thanks for submitting this photo. I really like the concept of your flipped and blended image. I do think it needs a bit more contrast and a cleanup of distracting items.

A screenshot is below of what I'd suggest.

I started with making the vertical element truly vertical as it was tilted to the left a bit.  I then removed all the distracting elements of the lights, fire sprinklers in the ceiling and a few items on the two columns.

Next I converted it to black & white and boosted the contrast using a s-curve with the curves tool in photoshop. I also tweaked the underlying colors abit to taste.

I then made 2 layer copies of the image and flipped the bottom image. I then used the eraser tool to expose the flipped ceiling on the bottom layer.

I hope this gives you some ideas to consider.

Best wishes,
