Hello to all curators, I am delighted to share with you one of my photos, which I have converted to black and white. I am in my hometown, Noto, standing on the terrace of the Church of Santa Chiara, with the cathedral and its magnificent dome before me. I believe I have cropped the image well, and the black-and-white effect seems quite pleasing to me. I would be honored to receive your expert opinion, and I sincerely
thank you in advance for your time and attention.
Hi Corrado,
thank you for sharing the image with us, I can see why you were attracted by this, it is a very beautiful building. You have done a good job in converting it to BW and adding drama to the sky to contrast with the main dome. The image is sharp and you can see the details well.
I will offer two suggestion, first one can be done in post, and that is to bring more highlights to the left towwer, I find it too dark and my mind tries to understand how the light was falling.
The second one is about the overall composition, there are two elements that are distracting: the black iron work in the foreground (did you shoot it from a balcony across the street?) and the second is the brigh gap in the center that makes the composition very unbalanced IMHO. Without a re-shoot, you could try a 1:1 crop and leave only the righmost tower and the main dome.
If you try shooting again, framing a couple of steps to the left would change the perspective and minimize the gap. Having a slightly higher viewpoint (or if possible, shoot through the gap) will clean up the composition.
Overall you've done a very nice job bringing out the tones and highlighting the structure. I hope it helps. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Cheers,
Calin
