Cat in Window

I classified this photo for curators

as "animals" and perhaps should have dubbed it "street". Having said that, I will tell you that what attracted me the most, when I was passing by this shop window, was the cat's posture facing the street, as it would have placed itself between the shutter and the window glass. I found it very curious. Regarding the photo, I came across all the reflection of everything that was narrated, including my person in photographic pose... I did not give up and got the image of an assertive cat without taking away the "street" component.  He was interested in the street, perhaps it was his everyday habit, and I, I was interested in him despite knowing that the glass and my lens could never excel in good resolution. The photo is worth to me for its originality and grace, for the joke it has in that place, in that city full of big buildings, a cosmopolitan city, in short, NY! Besides the proclaimed light in evaluating the photo, I also think that the culture, the message, and everything that can awaken good or bad in the people who see it is important.

The camera is a Fuji X100T 23 mm 2.0, f/2, !/125, ISO 400. I used Ad LR

What could I do more than I did with the means I had available?

Thanks for submitting this. It's hard to say that this would ever be accepted by the 1X curator. Despite its good qualities they probably don't find it "edgy" enough to be popular. That doesn't, however, mean it's a bad photo. Curation is subjective and if your photo doesn't match the tastes of the judge it doesn' t matter.

The cat is well exposed and in nice sharp focus and has a wonderful pose.  The street scene (including you) is subtle enough to make its presence known without overpowering the whole image. The window frame is a nice framing image (except at the top) for the scene. Overall, I like the image.

The only suggestion I have if it is possible that this would be a portrait orientation, that is, a vertical format. This would allow you to have the top window frame included to complete the framing elements.  Additionally, it you provide a nice negate space above the cat with the cat anchoring the image and would be a minimalist image.

I hope this gives you something to consider,

Best wishes,

Jorge,

I love it!   But I'm not the best judge of cat photos because I'm a cat lover at heart.

It's an excellent photo just as it is.  The sharpness on the subject is very good.  One small suggestion - that you consider de-saturating the bright yellow vehicle.  It's a small distraction.

Because Mike S. suggested that the top window frame could be included I began to wonder how that could be done in editing, and gave it a try.  A duplicate  image was made, flipped left to right,  and then one of the window frame pieces was selected and moved to the top of the original.  A bit of work with the Clone tool finished up the illusion.   Now that I see it I'm not sure it's an improvement at all.  Your original is very good already.

I thought the image might work better flipped, so tried that too. There is some text on the background sign, but it's blurred enough no one will notice it's reversed. Kitty's eyes and nose were given a bit of saturation with Photoshop's 'Sponge' tool set to 'Saturate'.

Some cats I've known seemed to enjoy sitting and watching the world go by.  This photo reminded me of one of them in particular.  I thank you for sharing this photograph.

Hello Jorge,

Like Steven T, I am a great cat lover and I love your photo too for the mood, the typical act of a cat watching from a window, and the beauty of the cat ifself. I like the idea that has been suggested of including the top frame of the window, but as a possible alternative I have cropped the top of the frame. I also felt that the yellow area of a vehicle was distracting, so I am posting a monochrome version of your photo as another option you might consider. As always, it's for you to decide.

Good light, Elizabeth

I thank Mike, Steven and Elizabeth, for their thoughts on the photo and once again I saw myself in the mirror as ignorant of a lot of things regarding how to photograph. For example, I learned that I could alter reality by framing the window (she was too tall)...the "distraction" problem was also put to me but I thought the "street" element was essential to justify or emphasize the pose. Beyond the cat, there is the surprise of the situation he is in. I will take your teachings into account in the future. Thank you. After trying to post some more photos by the curator, I will instead refer to your care because it enriches me much more than the quotations given by the curator.
