I took this photo of the Harlem, NY ConEd explosion in 2014, the day after, from a dirty train window. I have tried to fix the upper left sky where the smudges from the window were most visible, cloned out a few white spots in the tracks, used some clarity for the main shot and decreased the clarity and dehase on the upper left sky portion. I converted to black and white with Silver Effects. I also tried the LIghtroom enhance to improve the low resolution.
Is there any way to improve the appearance of the photo? Any assistance and critique is greatly appreciated. This was taken the day after the explosion and you can still see the firefighters battling the blase. Eight people died. There was debri all over the tracks on the first day, which I did not see, as it happened before I was to leave and I had to take a subway to Yankee Stadium to get back home.
Adding the details, it was an iphone 4, iso 80, I didn't set anything on the cell phone.
Kathryn welcome to critique. I will jump right in as they say. This is a low res image as you know and a lot of noise and depth of focus is working against the over all look and quality. This is what I came up with back in Photoshop / Camera Raw / Transform tool to straighten the building / Dehaze +40 to add depth and contrast. - Last I used Topaz AI sharpen to try and help the overall quality look is has a built in de-noise. Thank you for sharing... The highlights in the smoke might need some work but I think you get the idea...
Thank you som much, Daniel. I know it is very low resolution but I still would like to improve it and your version is so much better.
Hello, Kathryn
Welcome to the forum. Thank you for uploading your image. It is quite a dramatic image you uploaded here. My friend's straightening suggestion is what I would suggest had he nıt before . That is really crucial to the image. If your image's resolution had been better, I would also have suggested cropping it so that it famed the burnt building on the left and the smoke on the right. However, that would make no sense with this resolution. I would like to have seen the burning area closer and the fire fighters, too. It is a good documentary of that drastic day in question. I wish you good light. Çiçek...
Thank you Cicek, I appreciate all your advise and impressions. I completely forgot about straightening the image. Not much can be done about an old cell pic's resolution but I do want to develop it as well as I can. I agree, a closer shot of the firemen would have been better but I was lucky to get any shot as it wasn't planned and usually something else would obstruct the view but I think that the track next to me was not in service to prevent the building from shaking so I had a clear view.
Thanks again, I am so glad to have 1x's invaluable critiques.
