Last seconds
To get a photo of a cheetah hunt means luck of the draw. I tried it for so many years, but I always failed. You can do some preparation in advance when you see a hunt is going to start the next time, but at the end it's a matter of luck. In most cases the cat and the prey run into another direction or directly towards your car. To get both animals passing your car not too far away, that's pure luck. And they are so fast, your eyes can't follow the action, you simply have to shoot. When it was over I nearly couln't believe that it had worked perfectly this time!

Congratulations with this amazing capture Werner.

I'm glad you finally, after so many times of bad luck, managed to get the shot you wanted for years.
Good for us viewers also because now we have got the change to look at it.
Thanks for sharing.

as humans eating meat usually prepared nicely in pieces it's good to face nature :-) every now and then... congrats to a really splendid shot. what amazes me most here is the utter beauty in both animals, such opposite poses, just like their fates... you stopped time and gave it space, you created a moment of art here! just excellent! wonderfully rewarding it must be for you, and well deserved!
(of course, I love cats.... ;-))

I think I don't want to know how this ended but it's a great shot. Dynamism and clarity ... super. And yes, it takes much more then mere luck to get this kind of results. Congrats!
Werner Bollmann  Dear Ion,

it ended up seconds later in the way we all would expect. This cheetah female had three little cubs to nurse, so it was very important for her to make as many succesful hunts as possible. And there were a lot of hyeanas in this area, which are a deadly threat to the cubs. The mother had to be very alert all the time. Really a stressful job!

And - by the way - thank you very much to everybody for all the nice compliments!!!

As with all good wildlife action photography, patience and perseverance are the key to unlocking the oportunity but making the most of that oportunity takes skill and planning and your image is a fine example of the dedication needed to achieve such wonderful results as this.
This is top drawer photography Werner and dare i say it, a potential winner in any wildlife photography competition should you choose to enter it ;-)
Congratulations on a well earned catch........it's a beauty :-)
Best regards
Vic.

Werner it is so refreshing to read such an honest narrative beside such an amazing photo. Since I have experience of shooting action I can only agree. But I would add that your luck is a result of your effort so in that effort you make your own luck & with experience you place yourself in such a way that it is no longer luck but judgment that way we can applaud you & not your luck! Certainly your capture is superb & captures the struggle for life & death survival on the one hand is about avoiding death by running while on the other its about staving off hunger. The hunter & the hunted a drama played out every hour of every day in the wild. Thank you for giving us the chance to experience the power of this amazing event.
