great shot. taking a photo of these stairs might actually be the reason that will make me set foot on vatican soil...
Serban Mestecaneanu  yannick, you will find other 'treasures' like this in that place!
yannick luthy  Ok thanks for the advice,
Guess I'll just have to wake up early to avoid the queue.

A lovely and interesting picture. I like the title too. I have just posted a picture I took of the same exit.
Serban Mestecaneanu  Hi Frank, I saw yours today and thought first it was mine! you know what they say, great minds think alike! :-)

Great shot, wonderfull dof and shutter speed. "bending over the rail" makes it sound like you hand heald this shot, did you use anything to steady the camera? Hand held long exposures are a real challange for me (or perhaps it's all the coffee I drink)
Serban Mestecaneanu  thanks Ada, I used nothing but my hands, the shutter speed was about 1/15 i think

Beautiful, symbolic, and perfect. Always, Cile
Serban Mestecaneanu  Cile, thank you for your comments
Cile Bailey  My pleasure. I have always been fascinated by the spiral design. life-death-rebirth. I have done much work on this subject, but yours is magnificent, Always, Cile

There's a great feeling of depth in this photograph. The decision to have the centre of the spiral off-centre really makes the image; it wouldn't have had nearly the same impact if it had been centrally placed. Good choice of shutter speed; it conveys a lovely sense of movement.
Serban Mestecaneanu  thanks Alan, I remember I used spot metering on the central of the circle - but I had to wait some time to get the right 'amount' of people to populate the stairs (they usually come in groups) - luckily no one bothered by my pressence. Re the composition, I visualised one more option on portrait with the central of the spiral on the lower left, but no much for impact

Another great picture of spiral.
Really amazing!
The tones are perfect!
Serban Mestecaneanu  Thanks Andre, I was also fortunate to get a mixture of artificial and natural light which created the tones

Was there myself just 3 weeks ago - my images was not as good as this. B&W looks excellent.
Serban Mestecaneanu  it is me probably but in most of the cases what I shoot looks better in B&W

Very elegant feel to this one......and very impressive photographic work indeed.
Serban Mestecaneanu  thanks Matti

Serban, another excellent piece. I was there many years ago and shot a similar scene. I think I'll pull out the negative and reprint it. This is, as is all of your work, an inspiration!
Serban Mestecaneanu  you are very kind, thanks, as I said I think there are some places which simply ask to be photographed and is hard to get anything from a decent outcome

Serban Mestecaneanu  Thanks Tandy for your words, I think there are some places where you simply get inspired more than others, and the Vatican...

Nicely composed, and just the right amount of blur!
Serban Mestecaneanu  thanks Maria, I think I shot about 10 images and I chose this one with as you say the optimum mixture of blur

Beautiful shot Serban! May be similar to mine (who would have thought, a train station in Canada and the Vatican) but completely unique. Beautiful tones and treatment. Well done!
Serban Mestecaneanu  great minds think alike! :-)

Very nice composition ! I like this treatment ! ;)
Serban Mestecaneanu  thanks Olivier - what exactly do you mean by treatment? the toning or the framing?
Olivier  By treatment, I wanted to say the conversion in B&W, whom I find very well realized!
Serban Mestecaneanu  aha, I understand now Olivier. I used red filtre when converting for the central of the spiral to get more in focus (that white circle)
Olivier  Thank you for these details! Very good work ! ;)

Nice, very nice. Perfect shutter speed as well!
Serban Mestecaneanu  Thanks Ulf, glad you like it

This is not an original view but is certainly one of the best I have seen from the staircase. Well done, Serban.
Serban Mestecaneanu  sorry I think I mixed up Stephane with Stephan answer :-) so to continue in the same way, now I reply to Stephane - I was slightly bending over the rail, but not that dangerously as one should think
Stephane Barbotin 4 years ago
really nice. excellent composition. you must have bent dangerously over the upper floor's rail!
Serban Mestecaneanu  you are right Stephane, I have seen it before, but not in B&W
