King Douglas, I put the tripod about 30 cm from the edge, because I didn't want the rocks in my feet to be into the frame. It was cold and icy, the ground was a bit slippery, but I survived :). It is a vertical panorama, actually two panoramas - long exposure for the waves and fast speed for the birds.

I can only imagine that you have a reasonable explanation but I cannot at the moment think what it might be. You have it appears used a slow shutter speed the water softness is the clue here! unless of course you have some practical tips as to how this can be created in PP. If the soft effect comes in camera why are the birds stopped in flight & not blurred were these added in PP? It would be interesting to understand how you achieved this effect.
