In retreat - The young lama
High up in the Tibetan plateau, far away from everything in a bitterly cold region I found a group two mud houses, a series of chörtens and a small temple with a huge Tibetan praying wheel. In these houses lived a master and two apprentices who gave me shelter and food. This young lama was one of them. They spent all day from early morning till late in the evening praying, reciting mantras and meditating. The master had spent 8 years there already, in retreat, and had no plans to leave anytime soon.

Beautiful portrait of young lama in authentic environment. I dont know if they have need to read books. It should be very interesting to translate and give them Herman Hesse Sidartha. Regards and thank you.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot Dragan! They do not read the books we read but they spend most of the time reading, reciting and chanting the sutras (the teachings of Buddha) and it is really beautiful to hear it. Sidartha was the very first book that when I was 18 introduced me indirectly to the world of buddhism, and since then I never left it. One of the most wonderful books that history has given us.

Magnificent Nicolas, we are in Burma at ther moment and hope to meet people as wonderful as this man.
Nicolas Marino  WOw Wayne! in Burma??? Burma is by far one of my favorites countries in the world. I was there in 2002 and loved it, I didn't want to leave, at that time the country had no internet at all, I was completely isolated. YOu gotta go to Inle Lake, Fantastic !!
keep me posted!!

Nic - I like this image as much for the environment as for the monk himself...you captured the feeling of a Tibet kitchen? They have big pots..I always notice that in your pictures...I guess they are cooking for many? I cannot help but imagine how truly profound these visits have to be for you. Congratulations...Phyl
Nicolas Marino  Truly profound indeed. Each one of these encounters have enriched my life in ways I have no way to measure. you know that Phyllie :)

So pleased this photo made it !
I noticed it in the "voting" process !
This young lama's face is so peaceful, he is so confident, so sure of his faith.
You're conveying this feeling of compassion so well in this picture, Nicolas !
It really is beautiful.

Marie-Claude
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Marie-Claude, he was really special indeed. Now I added a little bit of the story. They live in retreat in a very remote and harsh region of the plateau. Amazing human beings :)
