Very beautiful Gerard, what a great face. There's something in his look that forses you to keep looking.
gerard sexton  Hi Patricia his expression is as you suggest emotionally engaging what helps is that his eyes also have catch lights in them from the winter sun which prevent the blurred light shapes in the right side being a distraction also his nearest eye is in focus but the depth of field is good enough to keep detail in his left eye. His strong forceful look & slight frown take us into wondering what he might be thinking! Thank you for stopping by & taking the time to leave your thoughts.
Patricia  The catch lights are nice indeed. They keep you from wondering. I always want to have catchlights in the eyes I shoot for me a image is always nicer with them, but did you think about them helping in the image when you took it? I mean that they would help to avoid eyes going to the lighter bokeh?

I want them because the eyes look more alive, but I never thought about them the way you describe, but when you did I know you are right.. I think your DoF is very nice..
gerard sexton  Patricia the visits I make to this park at all times of the year tell me where the light will be though it is not always possible to take advantage on this day I was blessed. I knew the light was right he is facing south the position of the winter sun. However what I couldn't know was that the catch-lights were there because he moved in the process of me taking this frame but thats where luck plays a part I used the conditions to my advantage & by doing so I was gifted the bonus of the catch-lights!. My PP also helped to reduce the impact of the brighter figures in the right side I think I added two separate gradients.

powerful and thought provoking...its difficult to look away...your gritty street portraits of rough looking people are my favorites...very nice to see another one
gerard sexton  This type of shooting is top of my list but not every time do my images make it here but then thats the challenge because often if its not the light it may be the processing that keeps them away! Thanks for your positive words Scott!

Gerry, You have framed him perfectly in the shot. and pulled out to the viewer his best features...oh those brows! His look is powerful, but also vague enough to project my thoughts onto him...A great shot. Congrats to you. Phyl
gerard sexton  Hi Phyl thank you so much I am so grateful that you think so. He does have a really strong face very handsome ask Bill if he remembers Anthony Quayle I think this man has similar features. But I think it does have broad appeal because of the conversion & the light figures blurred on the right. I am getting better at the B&W conversion but I still feel there is so much to learn! Have a great weekend.

Typo below .... rather: NOT have to assimilate ....

Gerry - This one goes right to the top of your pile for me. I read what Codrin commented below, and share the feeling that he expressed. intense, however, not direct, so that we have to assimilate and thus feel the pressure. This allows me to view this in a relaxed manner, and as I am not 'imposing', I can savour the energy and strength in this. Seriously Bravo!
gerard sexton  Cheers Andre stolen shot but with everything in my favour shot at f4 to get that nice bokah on the right of the people by the lake side. And I am learning to do different things in B&W sometimes though I still overwork an image. He has a classical face yes intense stare yet in another frame his mouth is open & his front tooth or teeth are missing the look is completely different! See you tomorrow!

The intensity in the way he is looking is really incredible, for me this image is somehow taken from an opera classical (almost each piece, well, ok, masterpiece has a character to suit with this look). Great one Gerry, a fascinating face indeed! Cheers!
gerard sexton  Codrin hello my friend thanks for stopping by. He has a great face & I was lucky to catch him facing the light the glint in his eyes & that faraway look. It was taken far off though after taking this I went & talked with this man. He is often in the park feeding the birds & many squirrels during the winter months. He allowed me to take more shots which are more engaging but sadly never made to the FP. To tell the truth this was on my HD for 8 months until last week & I decided to work on it. I am always learning new things which is so wonderful as well as frustrating as if I knew then what I know now well I am sure you know.....the feeling! Thank you as always.

A Great portrait - well done to you, gerard. Deservedly up here - the tonal range and composition/mood simply first class.
gerard sexton  Hi Colmar long-time no see! all good I hope? I am honoured you think so highly of this.

a cracker, the shot, the model, the B&W post processing all components work for this one
gerard sexton  Cheers Chris. Seeing Andre tomorrow will discuss the idea! There is also a Don McCullin exhibition at the IWM!
Perfect.

Its all there for me Gerard, skin tone and expression along with a pleasing background and the fact that his face is lit very subtle in the places it should be. A quality conversion throughout.
gerard sexton  Thank you Ian I wish I could get him in a studio but hey getting this from so far off is enough. If you check my homepage I have one there of him in my People gallery where he is feeding a squirrel which I like more but hey less mood than this!
