Just another day in Tibet
Photo series by Nicolas Marino
It is the beginning of October, the high season is almost over and Tashi, his family and a few friends are the only nomads left at the camp at the foothill of the sacred mount Amnyemachen, where they spent the summer herding their 200 precious yaks. The usual blizzard strikes at the end of the day and yaks need to be brought back down to the camp at 4460 mts after a long day of grazing in the highlands. Every member of the family undertakes this hard daily task. It is freezing cold but they carry on in complete harmony as if unaltered by the harshness of their environment. Back at the tent, the warmth of the yak dung-fueled fireplace and the hot yak milk tea await to keep everybody warm. As the night falls, women prepare the food while everybody is entertained chatting and gossiping. Outside, several degrees bellow zero, yaks sleep covered under a thick layer of frost, the storm has passed and billions of stars shine along the full moon. Just another day in Tibet.

Oh what an intense joy to see this serie. It's a good thing that 1x makes this possible as an option.
You know already that your pictures touches my heart deeply, and still they do.
I'd really wish I was younger and had the opportunity and the strength to travel the way you do. But whenever it is possible for me too, I stay with the local people in theirs houses, yourts or tents.
Thanks for sharing those wonderful moments captured in great pictures ..... Bravo Nicolas !! ?
Nicolas Marino  THank you sooo much dear Reggy ! and don't say you wish you were younger because you've done things -walking in no less than xinjiang - that I admire a lot and I hope I can still and feel like doing them when I get older :)
I hope one day I'm cycling some road and I find you along the way. What a treat that would be !! :))
Reggy  Yes that would be a very very nice surprise Nicolas!! :-))))))))

Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot Hillbilly :). It is indeed a very eye opening experience to be with them. And i guess the reason why I keep coming back to them and these places over and over, it's because they help me not to lose perspective in this easy life of ours.

Really story-telling series which makes me feel the atmosphere as I have been to Tibet by bike even with snow in Oct, too, but it is about 10 years ago...
Nicolas Marino  ohhh so you know what it's like Claudia :) Extremely hard but truly rewarding isn't it? 10 years ago it must've been so wonderful, when restrictions were less than they are today, that sadly the situation has deteriorated so badly for them and at teh same time has kept us away from them as well. Thanks a lot for you comment :)
Claudia Termeer  We had problems with surprising government-decisions as well and the highway from Lhasa to Kathmandu was only tared for about 100-150 km of about 1000, the rest was only out of sand and stones. So if trucks passed and plenty of them did during a day...we looked like ghosts in the evening:-). But it was an unblievable experience and it mentally took me 3 months to realize to be back to Europe! - But I do not have any experience of the nowadays situation, of course.

This is really impressive Nicolas, both the photos as well the life of the nomads.
You have lived among them for a while?

Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot Jacob. Yes, I try to frequent and spend time with nomadic people every chance I got. All along the Tibetan plateau, I have lived or spent time with nomads every single day. It is a truly rewarding experience, that fills me with a different perspective on life. :)

I have been very impressed by this series. It's authentic as can be, and truly human. You have my greatest respect for this.
Nicolas Marino  Thank you so much for your words Monika! I really appreciate them.

Beautiful, authentic, powerful work Nicolas. It's not just the intense, raw humanity of your subjects that shows so clearly here - it is the compassion, care, and empathy that you have put into being with these people to document this day. It's been great reading though the many comments you've received - congratulations on a well-deserved ovation! And I would like to echo what Kim said - this is exactly the kind of situation that the series feature is made for.
That said - I still most love that last image of your bike parked in the snow outside the tent! And you said my effort in riding a few ks on a freeway was strenuous!!
Cheers,
Tim
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Tim! I'm really glad that you are able to appreciate this, because really, that's what these amazing people stir in me, empathy, compassion and this is something that to be honest I attribute this 100% to them not to me and possibly, that's the very reason why I am so attracted to them and I keep coming back to them over and over and over. They are something else, really.
As for the strenuous hehehe well, they are a different kind of strenuousness :) This was extremely tough indeed, the hardest I've ever done. I had to push my fully loaded bicycle uphill for 5hs, it was so steep, so cold and so snowy that it was impossible to cycle. But the reward is worth a thousand climbs :)

A fantastic series Nicolas.
I read with great pleasure your accurate description.
I focused more on the photos taken inside the tent where you look at the serene expressions of the subjects, despite having faced a day of cold and hard work.

My sincere congratulations, Antonio G.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Antonio! Indeed, the atmosphere inside was extremely relaxed and if I should choose a word to define it would be, joyful. I have a lot more from inside. the only problem with these, was the condensation on the lens' glasses. The difference in temperature between inside and outside was too big. All these photos came out foggy, removing it is a pain in the ass!! But I'm glad they worked here. :)

Faboulous! Compo, use of colours, last but not least the story. Congrat's!
A trivial question: where on earth could you ride your bike?:-)

Best regards: Tibor

P.s.: my favourites are maybe No 2 and 5, but the others are outstanding as well.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Tibor! It was extremely hard cycling! you have no idea. The day after that storm, I was falling off all the time, cycling on ice, and thick snow. I had to cycle up to 4600mts. It was incredibly tough.
You can see my bike on the last photo :) I want to ride my bike to every single corner !!
Wonderful...! One of the best series here on 1x :-)

Your mixture of the cold (B&W-ish) and the warm colour is so successfull here.

Stéphane Pagani  Yes I noticed the bicycle! That is what we can call a remote place to cycle!
RomImage 6 months ago
Nice series Nicolas, which part of Tibet is it ? no troubles with chinese authorities, usually they don't like a stranger go alone with nomad people.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks Rom. This is the east of Amdo (what the gvnt calls Qinghai). THere is hardly any trouble around these regions, this one and the rest of my last journey, because it is extremely remote. The very few "authorities" I found are pretty much young kids condemned by the police to serve for 2 years in these isolated regions where only Tibetans feel at ease. So, you pretty much have the place to yourself. There's almost no traffic at all because the roads are completely shattered and several stretches have no road at all. You only come across nomads and wild animals and a few tibetans venturing with their shit motorbikes going from village to village. The Chinese hardly every get around here. They stay along the popular roads.
RomImage  Thanks Nicolas for your response. ;)

I am so glad Ralf and Jacob sorted out the site to be able to have photos series - this is exactly the kind of set it was designed for. Outstanding, my friend!
Kim Ayres  I also thought the bike at the end was a great touch. But I have to say those tents look very thin and flimsy for the kinds of weather and temperatures
Nicolas Marino  Thanks so much Kim. I'm really glad too because this shots are very rough, i don't think they qualify as individuals. It was snowing at 180 degrees while I was shooting and I was indeed freeeezing! And if you look at the tent shots, I had a horrible time trying to remove the fogging. The lens' glass was so cold from outside that when I went inside, the warmth of the stove made the glasses and sensor condense. So all those photos came out foggy. Very hard to remove. !! But it was such a touching time with them. I'll show you soon, the backstage photos ;)
Kim Ayres  I look forward to seeing them :)
Christoph Hessel  You are right Kim, I even begin to freeze while watching :-)
Nicolas Marino  yes guys! it was freeeeezing and those tents are indeed flimsy and once the last yak dung is out, it freezes inside as well. We all slept covered under several layers of thick yak-smelly blankets. Very warm. :)

Nicolas - what a great series to be able to get to see. You have honored your journey to Tibet and these people by bringing them to us. How I wish it were possible for them to see themselves. And also to know how much they have impressed people by their lifestyle. Even though they have obvious hardships to see with - they seem to be physical ones. On an emotional level they seem to be a big family and filled with joy...The picture of the women in that sun lit room grabs my heart...they have their own immediate Sangha...Thank you Nic for making this journey so we all can know them. Phyl
Nicolas Marino  Phyl, I cannot begin to tell you the joy they have in them, they live this life as though the every day hardship didn't even touch them. THese people fill my heart really. They transmit this joy, this kindness they have inside. They are really amazing. Thanks so much for appreciating this Phyl :)
What a nice documentary series, Nicolas, and what a though environment!

An here we are in the rich parts of the world, complaining about our luxury problems... This series gives you perspective. I've been travelling quite a lot but the trip to Tibet was perhaps the one that left deepest marks, it was wonderful to see the land and meet the people but also sad and frustrating (I think you now what I'm hinting at but I don't want to get political now). Thanks for showing us this Nicolas!
Nicolas Marino  yes, I forgot to mention. I know exactly what you are talking about and indeed, it is extremely sad, painfully sad and it is amazing the stoicism with which they carry on.....you know where I live so I cannot talk much about it in public.
Nicolas Marino  You are totally right Björn and yes, one of the reasons why I keep coming back to these places, under such harsh conditions (you can see my bicycle parked in the last shot), is because being with them gives me back the perspective I tend to lose after too much time in this comfortable life of ours. Thanks a lot for appreciating this Björn :)

Powerful story about life at the one end of world. There are roots of civilization all in a small package. Living conditions are the harsh and cruel. But people struggling to live for what they have. Although this is a way of life similar to that of a thousand years ago, they now have a modern tents, appliances, stoves, they smoke. You have succeeded to say everything in just ten images. As in a fairy tale, at the end of the day above them shining stars as fate. Bravo and thank you for this beautiful photo story.
Nicolas Marino  Thanks a lot for your comment Dragan. Indeed, it's amazing how even though they still have a very precarious and harsh life, objects of the modern life, that go from appliances run by solar panels to clothes with western motifs, invade their lives. Big big changes happening!
