Anneline of Stormsvlei
Such a pleasing feeling to see that a picture of my visit to this family saw the light:)
This was taken on my last visit to SA in August this year. Swellendam is about half-way between where the plane lands in Cape Town, and my home in Plettenberg Bay, which is usually about a 6hr drive.
It was late afternoon, and at first I passed this house (a place that I have always noticed - a real rambling old homestead quite close to the motor-way, separated from the road by a barb-wire fence. However, a few km's down the road curiosity got the better of me, and I turned around to pay a visit to this family. In all I must have spent an hour there, and probably took about 20-30 images.
Unlike my usual habit, where I shall inspect all the rooms to find the best light and setting, on this occasion I simply rested with what Wiseman and Lena (Anneline's parents) showed me. I guess that was because I had been away from doing this type of work for some months, and the panache was not there, and I was more nervous than usual.
This session was more hard work than my usual impromptu sessions, as I was limited to a quite dark room (the sun was already drawing water), and a very dark room:)
So ... receiving this publication is a real boost for me, and .... by the way, that picture on the wall of the child to Anneline's left is actually a photograph of herself when she was younger.
On this occasion I only noted the names, and nothing more about what they do, and what their life is all about. However, when I pass there again in December and give them the prints, I shall record those outstanding details, and then I shall explore the rest of their house, and just maybe have the luck to add to the Qubeka family''s presence here , and fill in the missing details.

Andre, Perhaps you do not know it, but the meaning of Anneline's name is "Grace or favor." And Grace and Favor certainly smiled upon you when this angelic being smiled into your lens. The light falls on her face like a soft flame and her lovely features, tightly woven hair and serene smile give her a kind of Mona Lisa appearance. The photos on the wall behind, aged and tattered offer a history, time, place and belonging and your story adds you to that history if only for an hour. wonderful job my friend. I would love to put it on The Angels Wear Fins and do it great justice if you wouldn't mind. Let me know and Thank you. I looked up Stormsvlei. It means Storm lake. "Grace on Storm Lake" :)

pure poetry here Andre and I can see why the boost for you, the detail of the plants and the portraits behind it, make the big difference to me. The lighting must 've been dark, but it is so special. You really train your subjects not to move at 1/6s !!!! That's truly amazing. I tried at 1/10s lately and failed miserably, i'm still crying over some potentially spectacular portraits that came out blurry because of this.

Andre - Thankful for the story here...SHE is radiant. Really she lights that space up. When I look at so many of your pictures I have to day that if you tried to 'create' this environment in a studio - maybe you would accomplish it..but it would be like a Hollywood production..here what you found and made magic with is simply 'life' as we all can identify with it. Beautiful work ...congratulations. Phyllis
