City Kids
Not perfect with cropping, if I had only moved the camera down a touch.. but this is a shot of this young generation.. smart phones and skateboards.

this composition/crop = unconstrained, spur of the moment, real, raw
neat composition/crop you regret not having achieved = portrait-like, posed, reducing reality factor , too neat for this.

love it
Patricia Sweeney  thank you Koen. Your work impressed me greatly when I first joined 1x.. a big influence really.. thank you for your comments.

oh ,Pat....you definately should shot children more often!
wonderful photo!
Patricia Sweeney  thank you Monique.. I am shooting more children.. my kid (the one NOT looking at the camera) is a constant subject, and his friends are really interesting.. I will be shooting more of them. I have a very old picture of my father as a kid growing up in NYC, he was about the same age, with his gang. It's priceless, they were all mugging for the camera. I will post it somewhere soon, and I'll let you know.. it's an amazing pic.
Monique  i hope that you will upolad it somewhere where i'll be able to see it :)..i just love old photographs..i can sit all day and watch old albums...soooo..i am waiting for this promised from you :)))

I forgive you the cropping that's not a big deal. Great moment. The looks of the boys tells so much, a bit tired, full of concentration on the phones and wondered that you are taking a picture.... Great sharing this with us
Patricia Sweeney  thank you! the pleasure is all mine..

Beautiful shot with the facial expression of the kids.
Times changed, the skateboards make place for the smart phones.
Patricia Sweeney  thank you so much.. they are an interesting, complex group...

I think I'm my own worst critic when it comes to spotting potential flaws in my own pictures but when I sit back and think about it street photography is all about filling a frame as it happens so anything incidental is beyond my control and sometimes it's the little bits that make you think more and end up filling in the finer details. I'm waffling now and even beginning to confuse myself but I think I know what I mean .....at first it's just four kids with phones but then as you look more you see the skateboard and then glance back and see a potential tiredness in there faces and the wheels explain why...and then there's the eye contact. I'll shut up now because I guess you knew this already and it's just dandy as it is :-)
Voodoo Piles  Sounds familiar ;-)

The photographs of street need not be perfect, indeed. The big picture of us have left qst important secret and it is this concept that might seem trivial, to make special, unique and brilliant photographs of this kind. Add my thoughts to all, the simplicity of the action is captured better as you can see from the photographic world, with errors, gradient, crop, forced shots, shake, etc.. I have learned over the years to look 'beyond' and I often found myself observing masterpieces. Yours is a picture that touches the soul. Sincerely and with sympathy
Patricia Sweeney  wow, thank you so much, I am humbled by your response, and thanks for the vote of confidence! P

Pat - From the thumbnail with no identifying data I knew this was NYC...for a moment I thought Brooklyn..Park slope when I opened it I saw the tall buildings. I like the photo exactly as it is! The kids all look interesting in one way or another..and I am surprised they all have long hair. When you are from NYC you understand the magnitude and the importance of the STOOP. :) Congratulations..I love this shot. Phyllis
Koen Pieters  love that word stoop :) . don't think it's still used that often in english, is it?
In Belgium we often use the derivative "stoep" (pronounced the same way)
Phyllis Clarke  Interesting observation Peter. Some things we just take for granted. My husband (English) never heard of it used that way until he lived with me in NYC. I think it comes from the Dutch Stoep - and from Low Middle German which I see on line spelled as you wrote it. The Dutch of course were some of the first settlers in NYC. Pat's picture is not what I would call a typical stoop if there is such a thing. Usually it is a flight of stairs outside connected to a house. It was for me a major part of my teenage life in NYC - a place where friends met to congregate and talk, listen to doo-wop..meet the boys and all the rest. So when I see Pat's picture here - the kids need a place to just sit down and hang out, and they found it. My husband tells me it is an American thing..but maybe it is really a NYC thing. Culture is so much a part of photography I think...In NYC - life takes place on the stoop.....and Pat has really caught that here.
Patricia Sweeney  Hi Phyllis! It's in Tribeca, my son and his friends were hanging out, skateboarding, and constantly texting. This was a moment of repose, if you can call it that.. and the long hair, no self respecting 11 year old in NYC has short hair! So glad you like it!
