Fried Feet
Looking at this now, there are so many things that I wish I'd tweaked with the composition. At the time, I was distracted by the smell of my shoes and tripod feet melting. Taken on a photo tour with Bruce Omori from Extreme Exposures. Not only is he one of the nicest people I've ever met, he's also one of the best lava photographers on the planet. I have much MUCH to learn. I finally convinced Bruce to join 1x, and hopefully he will be uploading his work soon. You all are in for a treat!

Thanks so much everyone for the warm reception. It was indeed an incredible experience.

To answer your question, Daniel, my shutter speeds were generally 1-2 seconds. It's a difficult subject, because the heat radiating from the lava makes many image fuzzy. You want a shutter speed long enough to show movement, but not long enough to let the heat waves kill the quality.

As far as what to bring.... Bruce told me to bring long sleeve clothes. No kidding. It will burn your skin if you don't have it covered. The other thing was an umbrella. Not for rain, though it does that a lot, but to poke the ground you are traversing to see if you are about to step through a lava tube.

When I was there, you had to have a guide, as the flow was on private land. It's stopped since, but appears to be getting ready to resume. Where it goes this time is anyones guess. I'll say this though, there is a huge safety benefit to being out there with a guide who knows what he/she is doing. It's not a particularly safe environment, and it helps to follow someone who knows what danger to look for. It's the trip of a lifetime though. You won't ever forget it.
