Vincent the Umkhwetha: The Making of a Man
In his book 'Long Walk to Freedom', Nelson Mandela comments on how a Xhosa man who has not been circumcised is a paradox, because he is still viewed as a boy.

My own memory of this image was very special. I was traveling back from Knysna, the next coastal town down the N2, and saw this young man in the bushes as I was approaching Plettenberg Bay. The Mkwetha needs to stay away from all during this fortnight of initiation, so I was a bit hesitant to approach. However, my curiosity and wish to meet him, and photograph him, became the better, and I turned in at the township of Kwanekothule, struck up a conversation with a boy of about 18 (John Godoma who works for the local newspaper The Bitou News), and told him that I wanted to go and meet (and photograph) this man painted white with this compound made from Ifuta (white stone)
Let me state that the Mkwetha is not something unfamiliar to me. They have been part of my life since I can remember. Ever-present in any green fields outside the perimeter of any Eastern Cape city or town. When I played golf as a teenager, they will emerge from the bush trying to sell golf balls that they picked up, and volunteer to be a caddy. However, if there was a female present in our party, they will not show face, as any contact with females are prohibited during this period of attaining manhood. This ritual comes down the ages, and is performed by the elders. The wound are wrapped in medicinal leaves, and the ritual usually takes about two - four weeks to be completed.
This is Vincent Mlinjana, aged 17, who lives in Knysna, and in his final year at high school. He had some fellow Xhosa boys sharing his experience and camping out with him, but when I visited, they had already left. Their transformation was done, and they had re-integrated back into their soceity, albeit as men.
I saw the burnt-out patches of where their lean-to's were - they have to burn everything that sustained them for the two weeks. Shelter, cooking utensils, bedding - everything. The are many strict rules that govern this period of separation and the diet to be adhered to - too many to write down here.
It is also demanded that they are welcomed back into the society with a bang:) Huge party, and the slaughter of some animal, and the words of some elder to proclaim them as wholesome and a man.
What is so special about this for me is that my house is a mere 10 km down the road, where I relax with broadband, can do online shopping, and insist on Balsamic vinegar on my salad leaves.
Yet 10 km before that place that I call my house, I can turn off the road and be transported into something so distant, so honest and so African, and so enriching.
When I spoke to Vincent he was awaiting word back from the college in Knysna where he applied for training as an IT specialist. I have lost contact with him; however, within the next few weeks I shall be traveling down there and I have promised myself that I shall re-establish contact with him, hear how his studies are going, and hand him some prints.
Hopefully I shall be able to post again here to tell you how Vincent is, and I shall ask him how he reflects on this Mkwetha time of his.

Thank you Andre. As a man living far north up in Sweden, your story and picture from a continent where I've never been gives me a warm feeling that all the mystrious things in this world isn't to far away. I loved the story as well as the picture. and more over, I do really share your love for BW photos. Colours can be fantastic as well, but can often be deceiving and delude the brain away from what is important in the picture while the BW photo is clean somehow, it has a greater ability to lift out details "as the are". Thank you again.

Andre, you always have this magic power to make a ordinary thing becoming out of the ordinary, and I really want to follow your footstep to touch this kind of life by myself. It's very myterious for me because it's so far from me and I'm a Chinese girl.

In my opinion, maybe Vincent is waiting for your coming?
Andre du Plessis  Dear Echo. What you said about ordinary things pleases me immensely. Yes, I think that is what challenges me. As far as you being so far away, I can fully understand that you will find this image strange, however, I am so sure that there are weird and wonderful opportunities there in your part of the world, which I am sure will be as strange for me as this is for you. Best wishes!

EMOTION ! émotions!
A work or you always look for this emotion in the glance. You keep(guard) in you smiles, enjoyments, tears, anger, depth of the glances. I have your work a lot. Petitelfe

Un travail ou tu recherches toujours cette émotion dans le regard . Tu gardes en toi des sourires, des joies, des pleurs , de la colère, de la profondeur des regards. J'ai beaucoup ton travail. Petitelfe

Bravo Andre! The photo is excellent, but the explnation is simply fantastic!
Andre du Plessis  Glad to hear that the story assists in this. Sometimes one simply 'has to' add that extra bit, especially on a topic probably so far removed from the general lives of most members.

Great story of how you made this impressive image Andre, for me it has me staring at the screen looking at his soul and him looking back at this strang white man!

Great work.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks tony, and glad that the impact resonates with you. In this frame I asked him for a more piercing expression, as a smile would probably have not quite cut the cake .... although, I have some of those as well:)

Andre....It is good you followed your instinct to go back for many reasons. The one that I can't stop thinking about is how you have " frozen in time" one of the most important events that will happen to this individual probably in his life. As a viewer of your work it takes me a bit further into the understanding of the culture of SA. This photograph should be in a museum. Congratulations. I feel sure he will cherish this photo. Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Yes, sometimes it is good to check those files again:) Your thoughts on this photo serving as a recording for him of this episode makes me especially keen to search for him and deliver the prints. I would very much like to see if I can record the ordinary side of Vincent as well, so maybe an opportunity will arise.

Andre this image is wonderful haunting & fascinating in equal measure even without your narrative but with it you gift us more. A great insight into a traditional rite of passage. Encore monsieur!

Andre du Plessis  Oh, so you went back to buy that lens! Well, happy shooting with it. Yes, I would have liked very much to be part of that late afternoon chat. When I get back from SA after mid-July we do the bike thing again. Cheers and regards.
Corrado Chiozzi  Of course, in that period I will just be back from my first wedding photography, see you soon, and enjoy your SA ;)

Groete!

SUper shot and story Andre. Help me get this clear. THis is a young guy like any other but belongs to the Xhosa tribe?clan?, as part of that group he needs to undertake this ritual/experience you describe, but once over with it, he goes back to normal society like any other, where he studies, works, etc. Is that right? It is not that he comes from and goes back to tribal life...right?
Andre du Plessis  Hi Nicolas. Yes, you are correct in thinking that he comes from ordinary life, goes through this ritual around the age of 17 or 18, and then return to ordinary life as if nothing has changed. Well, other than being circumcised of course:)
