Kirk-- Somehow I missed this one when it was published, but I think it's a good shot. I don't find it exploitative at all and if we can't use photography to make a statement like this then we would be lesser artists for it. Good capture!

The opposite situation in the picture is good Kirk. Usually I protest when photographers take pictures of sleeping people, but here you show a secure world with money, influence and power. Against an uncertain world of drugs and vulnerability. The guy seem to lay comfortable but yet, uncertain future. I like the half tire of the Merzedes. greeting barbro
Kirk Cypel Hey Barbo,

I understand the hesitation: We blur the lines among exploitation, commentary, documentation. I did feel a little awkward with this one, the shot came up just by chance. I was walking down the street and saw the man sleeping. I liked the light and decided to take a few shots. I had this guilty feeling about taking the photographs. I felt that I was spying, that I was doing something wrong. Then, by coincidence, the Rolls Royce pulled up.

I feel ok about the shot because I think it makes a statement that goes beyond the tugging at the heart strings. I feel there is more of a social commentary. I also like that the photograph doesn't take sides - it is what it is. It seems that viewers make their own judgments and I like that.

Your comment however provokes thought. Just how many photographs of thin children with tattered clothes and big black eyes do we need? How many photographs of beggars? I also believe that there are contradictory standards applied to such photographs. It seems that photographs poverty in less developed countries are readily accepted and photographs of the homeless in more developed, or western countries, are more likely to be viewed as exploitative. Poverty is poverty no matter where it exists. Perhaps I should be more concerned about helping my neighbor down the street before I help some one a continent away. Perhaps not -- perhaps the person a continent away has fewer options and we need to reach across oceans to provide help. I'm not sure where I am going with this, your remark just got me thinking.

Perhaps - whether we view such photographs as exploitative or not - we need to keep taking and showing them. Perhaps the issue is that we only need to be sure that the photographs are truthful. Until the social issues underlying these photographs are eradicated, perhaps we need to keep these scenes in front of the public. Otherwise, how can we tell a story that needs to be toldl?

Perhaps this would make a good forum topic.
Barbro Nygren Perhaps I should be more concerned about helping my neighbor down the street before I help some one a continent away.
The risk is that, if you help on distance, help vanish on the way. Somebody else fills the pocket with need money.
Perhaps it is better to shot when homeless are awake. That create another story. Another content of social situations?
