yo, miles... what are you doing man!! post this thing on flickr, its absolutely ridiculous!!!!
mm767cap  Thanks T! I'll post it eventually... just waiting for the impact of everyone else's stellar stuff from that night to die down. :)
tailerransom  i just read the comments below... i'm wondering, which ISO did you originally think to use before you realized it wouldn't work with the bright light? i've seen handheld blends combining a properly exposed foreground and a separate exposure for the sky (at around ISO 3200)... which led me to believe that higher ISOs generally work better when you're working with stars. just was curious on your initial intentions.

i heard the 16-35L II is ridiculous, by the way. not sure if that's a new addition to your lens lineup or not (i know you had the 17-40L at one point). must be one of the best dSLR ultra wide angle lenses out there...
mm767cap  Well, I had done some research, and it seemed to me that with a 30 sec exposure, iSO 200 or so would be about as much as this scene could handle wide open at f2.8. That ended up being pretty close. I could bump it up a little bit more, but things got really blown out at about ISO 400. My initial plan was to shoot the beam at ISO 200, and then crank it up to ISO 1600 or so for the stars, but there was just no way. At ISO 1600 the beams got totally blown out and washed out the sky. The blend would have been impossible... for me anyway. So I shot it this way and then went back in and touched up the stars. Took me a few hours. :)

PS. 30 seconds was too long. I needed to be at 20. The stars were starting to trail on me at about 24mm here.

Picked up a 16-35 a few months ago, right before my Glacier trip. Got it for the sunstar, and for the f2.8. Came in handy here. Hope you had a great semester at school!

i really like the sky nice post work

and one question...is the light coming out from the light house natural, i thought it was a constant light...but it seems to be flashing
mm767cap  Thanks jorge!

It's a constant light. It's natural, in that it was actually there, but it only happens for 5 minutes a year. They stop the rotation when they fire up the old oil burning fresnel lens so it emits these beams. After 5 minutes, they start to rotate it again.
jorge ibanez  wow...again, incredible shoot...congrats

Beautiful.... And so fortunate that the night was clear and moonless!
mm767cap  Indeed! Thanks Carl. I was really hoping for clear skies. I've seen this shot in the fog, and it looks cool, but I really wanted some stars as well.

is this a HDR image?
mm767cap  In a way, but not the tradition sense. I used one exposure for the lighthouse and sky, but a different exposure for the water and foreground, as the image correctly exposed for the sky rendered the entire landscape black and the water really noisy as it was underexposed.

that is simply amazing! I read your comments below ... maybe you could have done a second one with higher ISO so the stars would come up brighter. Then blend those in PS ... just an idea from a beginner :) .. cheers
mm767cap  Thanks for the thoughts Radoslav! I actually DID try that, and have several shots at high ISO. The stars stand out much better, but the blend is impossible around the light beams. That was my first thought for a solution as well, but I just couldn't make it work.
Radoslav Iliev  haven't thought of that ... but many thanks for the clarification :) ... I saw your portfolio and your work is great, keep going!
cheers
mm767cap  Hey thanks! That is really kind of you Radoslav!

very nice, are the stars real???
mm767cap  Thanks Fadi! They are real, but they did require going in with Photoshop and touching them up. In order to keep the light from totally blowing out I had to shoot at ISO 200, which didn't allow the stars to be as bright as I wanted

Superb - brings back memories of my childhood holidays at the seaside where there was also a lighthouse.

But, your picture is simply wonderful and deservedly a favourite of mine on its own merits!
mm767cap  Why thanks Colmar! I certainly do appreciate it. I'd love to have some old childhood memories of lighthouses, but growing up landlocked, I don't. Hopefully these recent ones will stay with me for awhile now. :)

How long exposures ? Great picture
mm767cap  Hi Predgrag. This is 30 sec, ISO 200, wide open at f2.8. I still had to go in and touch up the stars a bit, but if I let any more light in for the stars, the lighthouse totally blew out. 30 seconds was slightly too long. If you look at this large enough on the master file, the stars were just starting to trail. Should have gone no more than 25 s.
mm767cap  Oopsy. Just noticed that I listed this image as ISO 320. This particular frame was shot at ISO 200. Sorry for the confusion

quite spectacular, its just a shame they didn't build it vertical........ ;-))

JP
mm767cap  ARGH!!!!! If you look at it long enough it starts to straighten out. :) It was SERIOUSLY distorted in cam, and I thought I had fixed it but... Thanks for the heads up! I've got it fixed now on the Master file. :)
Jerry Berry  You can always upload an "Improved" version.
Nicely done BTW. The night I was there was a bit foggy a few years back.
mm767cap  Thanks Jerry. I did indeed upload an improved version, so hopefully that fixes it soon!

I saw some images from the foggy year... the beams were BLAZING that night!
John Parminter  No problem, I was only pulling your leg......
