I took this portrait of Shiela Jantjies last week during my visit to my family in South Africa.
This was the 1st time that I photographed the people of Kranshoek, a Griqua community outside my home town of Plettenberg Bay. The Griquas consitute a subgroup of South Africa's heterogeneous and muliracial Coloured people. With the recent demographic changes since the fall of Apartheid, this community have now become much more mixed, with newcomers from the Transkei (Xhosa), as well as many folk from more distant sub-Saharan countries in search of economic betterment.
I accompanied a 'dotter' on this day - Cathy Coetzee - a health worker from 'That's It!' (American Charitable NGO - part of the George Bush initiative to combat Aids/HIV) assisting with the curbing and treatment of TB and HIV cases, which is rife in the more socially - economically deprived areas and communities in South Africa.
Whilst I was driving back home after our walkabout in Kranshoek to administer medicines to the more compromised patients at their houses, I noticed this dilapidated but attractive very green house, and stopped to introduce myself, and subsequently took pictures of Shiela, her sisters, and their kids. It was quite gloomly inside so had to up the ISO.
After our picture taking session was finished, Shiela showed me the rest of their house, and that was when I saw the potential of this particular corner in the bathroom.
Times are hard, money is little, and the menfolk are absent. Shiela was a primary school teacher before succumbing to depression in 1995 after her divorce, and have been unemployed ever since. Now her daughters and their boyfriends support her, and she collects a disability grant.
She is uncertain of the future, and here I have tried to use the cracked mirror to illustrate that. In that future reflection is both light, and a representative of the next generation bathed in this light, but in spite of this promise things are very uncertain for her at the moment....and this responsability is weighing her down...
I salute Shiela for her honesty, frankness and willingness to have me share her story with you.

It is a deeply moving composition. Her story is not just a personal one but a cultural one of displacement and change as a result of a deeply wounded social and political system still greatly in need of restoration and repair. Her economic condition and her depression are testimony to these facts. But you have elevated her situation and her Being with this beautiful portrait in which you have allowed setting to illustrate the subconscious concerns and yearnings of this isolated figure. I love the reflection of
the child in the mirror. Jung believed the child was the archetype of the soul. The cracked mirror is a wonderful inclusion. I am reminded of Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott/ "The mirror crack'd from side to side" do you know it?

An outstanding and engaging image, and really a heartbreaking story! Congratulations and thanks for sharing... Hope Shiela and her family are doing fine.
Andre du Plessis  Hi George - I got something wrong. See below for my reply. Andre
Andre du Plessis  Hello George. Many thanks for this kind comment. I have only met this family once (Aug 09), however, I shall be handing them the prints in December, and shall then see how they are getting along. Regards, Andre
Andre du Plessis  Hi George - I went to visit Shiela and her family on my vacation in SA Dec/Jan. She is well, is living in another house now, and from what I gained during my visit - things seem to be better. She is still unemployed, but there were some menfolk around that seems to keep the pot boiling. I took some new pictures, but they are not that special, however, I shall have a look at those files again. Really would like to add part 2 to this story. Regards, Andre
This is truly awesome! Great to see some of your masterpieces after being away from OneX for a while!

Congrats on being the commenter of the week. I'm so glad you were, because it led me to this image. One of the best portraits I've seen. It's a wonderful image compositionally, has perfect tonal range and exposure, and is a very interesting subject. And then you get to the reflection of the child in the mirror, and this image becomes simply brilliant.
Andre du Plessis  After reading your bit I now understand your member name. Captain of Boeing 767, with name M, surname M. Portland - you a test pilot? (Portland etc) Thank you ++ for the lovely comment.

Great one, Andre. Definitely one of my favourites!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Bernard. On this trip the N2 was having road works so instead I drove through Sir Lowrey's Village and the surrounding ever-expanding section of 'bykomers'. There seems to be so much material and possibilities there! That is right in your neck of the woods - so give it a go! Best wishes, Andre

This is by far my favourite work of yours, and it says quite a lot, as the competition here is so strong ;)
But this... this is so real, and speaks volumes to me; beautiful, honest portrait that reaches directly to your heart. Surely to be viewed several times again. Thanks for sharing, and all the best to you!

This is what i like about your photos: they are photos! in the most deep sense of it: they say something true about something that exists, in a very direct and simple manner, going through the look and eyes into the heart of the photographed individual. They are simple, not fancy, they do not need inventions, tricks; and most important, they have value starting the next second they were taken.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Mihnea. Gosh - thanks for those humbling words. I do enjoy this type of work, though, and hopefully it comes through in my pictures. Very happy that you like this. Regards, Andre

Such a wonderful picture, Andre! On her own, it would be a superb portrait, but with the mirror and reflected child it is sublime. It is photography like this which inspires me to grow and stretch my own meagre skills into something better.
Andre du Plessis  Hi Kim. On my last visit down in SA I had not yet joined OE, so this was the 1st time I went there with my head spinning from all the images we see on here daily. Before I would not have put this together like this, however, it is testament to the influence of the brilliant artists on this site that this setting all of a sudden made sense to me. Bravo to 1X from me.

Andre...With your camera you have shown us the almost unbearable hardship of poverty and illness that these two people must endure. Yet, it is framed with dignity, and respect both in your written words and 'how' you chose to show them to us. I believe any photographer looking at this photo, and seeing her face would want to know as much about you, and your philosophy of photography/people/life as they would about them. There is no way one could capture a photo like this without the photographer's ability to engage the subjects. Expertise might have allowed you to achieve technical perfection, but only your own connection and compassion, could bring out that expression on her face. My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Hi Phyllis. Your words are very touching, and for that I can only say thank you. Best wishes, Andre

Another very impressive and moving image from you, Andre, thanks a lot for sharing the story too! Love this!
Andre du Plessis  Hi Codrin. Always a pleasure to write something about the subjects. They are far away, and the experience of being photographed is not really a frequent occurance in their lives, so this adds to my satisfaction to speak on their behalf, and tell a bit more, and change then presence from two to three dimensional

......................
Andre du Plessis  Hi Slow Dance. Yes, the ingredients were there. After the initial session in the front room, I still felt a bit uncertain about anything worthwhile that might come from that, but here in the bathroom everything simply fell into place. Initially asked all 3 kids to line up in the reflection, but that defeated the object, and this one little girl did the trick for me. Many thanks for your comment.

really shows the enviorment togather with great portraits. really nice my friend:)
sasson haviv  i just had the time to read your story, very emotinal and its good that you show us thier lives. its good to relate to people even if they are far away.
Andre du Plessis  Hi sasson. Did you spot the camel in the back? Thought not, as I cloned it out:)
Some portraits that I take in these communities will not be complete for me unless I say
something about the people. I do enjoy that aspect, but more than that, I feel that I owe that.
Not all photos, just some environmental portraits. The narration completes the experience for me. Given the works that you
produce, I am quite sure that you will appreciate this.
Magda Berny 2 years ago
wonderfully composed... the child in the mirror and worm glance of a woman makes this photo for me!!!
Andre du Plessis  Dear Magda. I think that any of us members would have seen this cracked and ideally positioned mirror, and the potential it offers, and given my feelings at that stage, this compo came so naturally. I just happened to be the one who was there..
Many thanks, Andre

Andre du Plessis  Hi Fabio. I did have to ask the little one to move around a bit to 'fit' the composition (and miss the cracks), and the pretty little thing initially could not stop smiling:)
