Just like Me
The little one's name is Pumeza. She is 2 yrs old, and according to her dad Billy, she is very intelligent, confident, and 'knows everything and everybody' in the street. He quite noticably beams with pride when he speaks about her, and having taken pictures of her this day, I have to agree that she is a delight to work with. Just like putty - ask her to stand in a particular way and keep very still, and she simply does it. No probs.
She is sitting here on the family sofa with her auntie Janene, who is 18, and who sports a similar hairstyle. Apparently Pumeza copied Janene with this.
This community of Green Valley, also called Wittedrift, is about 10km from my house in Plettenberg Bay, but feels like a world apart.
Green Valley is quite an insular community, and the people here have essentially become one huge circle of friends and family. They are not keen on 'inkomers' / new settlers, and maintain that this keeps the village 'clean', with the result that crime and drug use is just about non-existent in this place.
They are also quite conservative in their outlook, and religion plays a big part of their lives.
This is the 1st time I have managed to get a publication on the people this particular village, so I am very chuffed about this one!

Fantastic! I always appreciate very much your pictures and I also appreciate bwl. My compliments
A beautiful photo. A beautiful composition triangle. An intense black and white. Two people live under. It feels tenderness, determination. It comes in the women's privacy protector. Petitelfe. /

Une superbe photo . Une belle composition en triangle . Un noir et blanc intense. Deux personnes au regard direct . On y ressent de la tendresse, de la détermination . On rentre dans l'intimité féminine protectrice . Petitelfe.

Oh Andre... how could I miss this one??

It´s just Your personal view to which I´m stuck to. It always seems as if You know them since ages... I´m not sure, how to describe this...

So lovely this one!!

this portrait is amazing André

can ask you sthg though? How could you get it so sharp at 1/13 !!! even if you use a tripod, ppl usually move slightly enough to make a 1/13th shot blurred.

If you were handholding...my bow to you mate!!! amazing pulse.

Andre du Plessis  LOL:) I coach them to stand still, and there are usually some other folk around, who I ask to double check that they keep still. Obviously I shoot a few frames as well...
I have uploaded similar shots that were taken at 1/8 sec. Camera secured on tripod, and with these manually depressed the shutter (only figured out afterwards how to engage the self-timer)
They usually also hold their breaths. These kids are very cooperative!
Andre du Plessis  ....and of course use a High Pass sharpening filter at the end.
Also sometimes manual sharpening along some strategic edges, as well as
loose curving along the same, to create an illusion of depth. Trial and error stuff...

There is a kind of sadness and wisdom in her eyes Andre.
Very emotional image to me.

Andre du Plessis  I think that people become adults quicker in these places, for
a lot of their time is dedicated to assisting with the household stuff.
...and that way they see life, and experience responsability, and gain that instinct for
survival so much earlier. Yet, when they play, they act out their age. So intoxicatingly positive to experience..
Glad that you can possibly join in on the 3rd!
Many thanks for the comments, Andre

Useless to add now (after the weekend) my compliments :)! However, Andre, I am curious about many things in your photography, but i would dare to ask you one: how do you do when you first knock at their door and want to get in, you say "hello, I am Andre and i would love to take your photos?" or what? What do you do to them, that people open so much? Of course, there are.... psychology and a lot of personal interaction, I know, but i also know that there is a first recipe, which more or less, is the same? :)
Andre du Plessis  Hi Mihnea. Thanks for commenting:) Yes, I usually do exactly what you 1st suggest: 'Hello, I am Andre, and I was wondering if I can take your picture....' I think that one's attitude and enthusiasm can be infectious and disarming, and I do out from the stand point that they will NOT refuse my request, rather that they 'might' refuse me.
In cities, when I see someone that I wish to photograph, I sometimes just tell them about this wish, and arrange to come back another time. That they really appreciate, and it removes the opportunism and suspicion. I presently have that arrangement with a chap that runs his gardening service business from his bicycle, and the local hairdresser. These people I know I shall see again, so no loss to postpone there, and I shall receive full cooperation there, I know. Outside of cities, and when traveling, I do it just there and then, and always share the 1st shot's LCD image with them, ask them how they like it and what I should do differently, after which it becomes a combined effort. Very important to also let them know that you will get some images over to them in some way, even if that means posting them to a shop close by etc. I am much more reserved and uncertain in big cities, and am working to get better and more confident in my approach there. Important to let them know that you are a hobbyist (if you are), and that this is not for money, however, that you might achieve publication online if the images are considered good by others. There is no fool-proof method - each situation warrants it's own considerations, but in essence go out there believing that they will enjoy this. That will give you the 'blind power' to approach them, and should they refuse, which happens often in cities, don't loose faith. Regards, Andre
Mihnea Turcu  Thank you very much for taking the time to share all these. I will try to take this further with me! You have discovered in this paragraph some real new things for me.

thank you,
Mihnea

Lovely shot Andre. Just back from holiday and this is a treat to come back to. You are never an intruder in your shots. That is such a valuable thing, and the story is so nice to read as well.

Andre..to know the story and a little about their lives - makes the picture take on a fuller dimension. If we all knew just a little something nice or intimate about everyone on this planet, I think wars would end. Because once you can identify- it is hard to kill yourself! :) The similar hair is a treat, but those TOES are hard to forget! :) Bravo for you..fantastic capture.. and oh please may I add this..Pumeza is looking right through you..old soul I think. :) My best, Phyllis
Andre du Plessis  Hi Phyllis. Yes, I think that her look is so mature. I felt the same when I took pictures of Celeste, the young girl in my Kannemeyer series. Both so pretty, and so content in the projection of their energy. Thanks for visiting, regards!
This is very good Andre! I like the story too and congrats to this special publish for you.
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Marcus. I am so glad for this family. Especially for the father Billy, who was the perfect host, and simply threw open his house when I knocked on their door. I shall show them this soon, and give them some prints. ...and maybe Pumeza will be around again for a different capture. Regards!

Andre,

I've just come in from a friends house where I watched the SA vs. AUS Rugby match - what a nice surprise to find your lovely picture up.

I am pleased to be able to say to you that I pressed the Green button on this early this morning.

Well done on a deserved publication again!

Go well.

Andre, thank you for sharing Pumeza's and Janene's story! This is the type of photography this is the passion of my heart, but I don't have much opportunity to shoot this type of photography very often. It touches me deeply, and I love it even more knowing a little about the people that drew me to them the minute I saw the thumbnail! I sincerely hope we can see more of your work with these people. Do you have a website, or somewhere to show more?
Andre du Plessis  Dear Sandy. It gives my great joy to read your comment, and I am glad that you appreciate this type of work.
No - I do not have a website. The only avenue that I use is 1X. However, I am on the quiet building up quite a substantial
rejection folder as well, so maybe I should drag that over to my Home Page:) (which is still 'under construction').
However, thanks for asking, but I think that I do not have a big enough repertoire as yet. I lost all my prints and negatives in a house move recently, so my work that I have here is only taken 2008/2009. Thirty years of taking pictures and thousands of negatives all gone.....sob-sob:(
Best wishes, Andre
Sandy Powers  Ohhhhhhhhhhh. . . now I'm sobbing tooo! That is devastating to hear of a life's work gone! Well. . . it is hard to believe if the rest of your work looks anything like this that your rejection folder is big -- but I have to say -- if artists like you have big rejection folders, then maybe I will stop beating myself up so much for my own ever growing rejection folder :) **hug**

Smashing tones and I just love the difference in both of their expressions, one would think that they should be reversed.
Andre du Plessis  :-) You are so correct Tracy. I notice this only now that you mention it. Yes, the expressions should be the other way around.
Enjoyed that observation:)
Absolutely nice "kids", absolutely nice photo.
I like the lightning very much.

Ottima realizzazione, hai fotografato due angeli!!
Andre du Plessis  Thanks Claudio. Yes, they were like angels to me. So flexible to work with, and that little Pumeza so cute. I think that this will look very nice up on their wall. Going there is a few weeks again.
Claudio Pio  La tua sensibilità mi par di percepirla....complimenti sinceri, tu vai oltre la fotografia.
Andre du Plessis  I am very humbled that you say that, and it means a lot to me. Thanks
