Breaker
Bell's Beach, Australia, has just experienced the biggest surf for many months. Taken at 7am just on sunrise. Image is as shot with levels adjustment and slight colour correction to 'cool' it down a bit.

Thought this looked familiar :) Won Photo-of-the-Month back in May 2009 on my "other" home @ POTD.com.au, how could I forget? :) Fantastic capture Heather, one to be printed BIG, framed, and put on a wall for ALL to see...

Nice to see it here @ 1x too!

This would have to be my all time fav of yours, the power of the wind and waves is so evident here!
Heather Hartkamp  Thanks Mel. It's my all time fav too. Mainly because it is a capture of random chance - won't happen again. Also because it is the first image I've managed to get on 1x - not easy - total 2 so far. But I keep plugging away! Nothing like a challenge!
Mel Brackstone  Indeed, the challenge is what keeps me going :)

Well done on your capture Heather. For me the composition and lighting are brilliant. I like the surfer too. He gives a good sense of scale and also portrays our insignificance in the face of nature. Lovely stuff.

Wow, this is amazing, just the right Australia feeling, calm but yet wild. Wonderful :)
I'm counting the days till me and my familiy is traveling to Australia for vacation... just some 360 days left :(

Heather Hartkamp  I do hope you manage to get to Australia Oyvind. I can show you just where this shot was taken if you get down my way!

Hi Heather
Beautiful shot, great timing and very nice lighting!
Congrats!
Heather Hartkamp  Thank you Eric and all the people below who have commented on my photo. I'm a bit overawed by the sheer talent on this site and have not really had the confidence to participate very much until now.
This is not a 'perfect' shot. I've had some very constructive (and welcome) feedback - 'too much foreground', 'the surfer is distracting', 'pity the wave on the left is cut off'. I agree with all of these. I noted these imperfections when I first downloaded the file and they would be easy to 'fix' in an editing program. But I decided to leave the shot as it was taken. To me it is one of those captures that will, most likely, never happen again for me. I can easily return to Bell's Beach - just a 20 minute car trip from my home - but to get the same set of conditions as there was on that morning would be virtually impossible. That's why I like it - a unique moment that I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time for. It is one of many shots that I took that morning standing on a rock metres from the pounding sea in a very strong wind - but I chose this one because I loved the light of the early dawn, the power of the waves and the little surfer relegated into insignificance by the huge sea. It's the thrill of the capture that gets me every time!!!

I am speechless, this is absolutely mind blowing capture of the wave breaking, surfer paddling and the sun crawling out to sprinkle it's light on this beauty. You managed to capture it all in this one amazing shot. Thank you a million times for sharing.
