We really "feel" sea here !
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Christw! That feeling is what I work for in my images, not working at a very high percentage of hits.

Beautiful shot! I'd hang that up somewhere if I could buy a print.
Love the colours and mood.
Very interesting subject matter-the type of ship, haven't seen these before. Sheesh the crew must have strong stomach for those churning waves.
Where were you to make this shot-On another ship, chopper, rig?
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment! And sorry for the late reply.
I was on a production ship (FPSO), which is a bit bigger than the Ranger. We too get shaked a little in weather like that..
The Ranger is a former supply ship for the oil industry, now used as a standby ship in the oil industry.

Prints are for sale, but not through 1x, as I had already started limited edition sales when 1x started the print service. It is available in 70x100cm and 100x150cm on canvas. The canvas is varnished after printing. I print on my own Epson 9900 which I believe is delivering the best quality available, and the varnish will make sure it can be dusted off with a moist cloth without damaging the print.

I can only dream of being this close. Splendid job Lars!
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Francis! I would like to get as close as this more often too. No ship not having supplies to us or like this one, our standby vessel, are allowed closer than 500 meters.

This does too....love how you captured the power of nature in a shot.
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Faddoush!
Awesome!
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot David!
This is another great situation here you captured here, Lars. The mood is there, the hard contrast in the water really underlines the storm here. I might miss the platform in the background as you had in your first one of these shots, it made a nice history. But still a great shot. Keep clicking ;o) Cheers, Sass
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Thomas! Yes, I wish I could direct the ships to where I wanted them. I actually can sometimes, but not in that kind of weather. I wouldn't want to make life more painful for them either.. or would I? Anything for a good shot!
Thomas Sass Pedersen  You're welcome, I enjoy these pictures a lot. You will get the shot sometime, I'm sure of that. And you're right, no way to risk others lifes in the search of a picture, maybe play a bit hazzardous with your own, but not others ;o)

Incrivel.. This boat was sinking?
Were the boat was and were u was to take this pic?
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Lucas! No, it is still floating. I was on another ship, a bit bigger. A bit shaky there too.

Awesome shot, was post processing was done on this?
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Scottyn!
Some processing is done, but not so much. It was shot in raw, as all my shots, so some contrast adjustment has to be done. Cropped away a little, then curves for contrast adjustment, and some desaturation. The picture was taken in March and the sea can go quite green here at that time

Wow... I've spent a significant portion of my life at sea, on sailboats, and this really speaks to me. It just resonates with the power of the elements.
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Robert!
I've also sailed. But I sold my yacht 3 years ago realizing I had too little time for sailing. I really miss sailing. And racing!
Robert Ward  So do I, it's too expensive for me in my retirement. When I was young, I was a sailmaker, for North Sails, and raced all over the world...
Lars Grepstad  I've not been at that level. But I have done 4 Shetland Races across the North Sea and back, and lots of local racing. All as a skipper on my own boat.

Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot for the comment Lappi! You mean out at sea?
Lappi  Yes! ;) I just love to be in storm! I did grove up at seacoast!.. And now I do live in middland ;(

Impressive action. I am not sure I want to be on that ship at that time. Or maybe just once, to know what it's like :-)
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Jeroen! I was not there, and I wouldn't want to be there either. I'm on a bigger ship, we were shaken too..

Superb!
If I was on that ship I think I would be a little bit sick. :))
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Tim!
Those people onboard those stand-by and supply ships are tough guys. Many former fishermen among them. On these vessels, at least they don't have to haul longlines or nets when weather goes bad..
Codrin Lupei 3 years ago
Happy to see it published, liked it a lot in screening, well, I've thought that it has to be yours! A very impressive capture, Lars, really powerful! Great one, love it!
all the best
Codrin
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Codrin. Yes, I guess it was recognized. This one has been overlooked for a while. Shooting quite a lot, then I don't get time for postprocessing.

Craig Martin 3 years ago
Awesome shot!! But where were you? You seem to be significantly higher than the bridge of the ship in the shot - were you in a helo? Tell us more about the making of it!
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Craig!
I was on a oil production vessel, on deck 7, which is probably about 20 meter over sea level. Where I would like to be is deck 5, but in conditions like that it is closed for safety reasons.
There is not much magic to making it. Find a place a bit out of the wind and sea spray. Wait for the right moment. Then hope to get a clear view without sea spray taking away the visibility.
Rouge 3 years ago
I like the ocean, the big waves, the storm... and the ship.... This is absolutely outstanding ! Very well done photo !
Lars Grepstad  Thanks a lot Rouge!
I don't think I can live without the ocean. Being there in rough conitions is fantastic, and to go below when conditions are good is great too.
