First off, amazing photo, I really love it. Secondly, I don't know much about space objects and speed, I'm just a student, but if that object is travelling as fast as you said it was ("...that this object disappeared during the next 30 seconds after this pic was taken...") then I think that the rings caused from the object are as a result of the object breaking the sound barrier. The object is travelling so fast that the vapour in the air is being forced into thos rings that you see. Once again, I don't know much, but it is something to think about... to me it makes sense... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_barrier. Truly an amazing time and place to be, and I hope no-one bothers you further on the authenticity of this photo.

As an aerial photographer I just put my tail between my legs...
But because of my emotional nature I won't talk any technical details in this thing, whatever it is. So many things must have been gone perfectly right position in this kind of phenomenon AND you noticed your possibilities to have good foto out of this scene, unbelievable. My suggest is that it's airplane, because I've seen strange lights reflecting out of those jet streams but who knows. This is beautiful to see and that's it, if someone is capable to do this then I have to believe something like that could happen to me and that's making me happy, Thank you John about that!

I googled this up because I got so curious. Incredible beauty. Is there a print available somewhere? I'd gladly hang this in my home for my own inspiration.
Perfect choice on the optics and underexposing. People claiming this one to be "over edited" don't seem to understand the whole process of creating photographs... Just as you have to develop a film image in a darkroom to make it complete, you have to post-process a digital image to make it complete - a photograph. The raw image won't look like the thing you saw live, and the complete image from technical choices to post-procession is the result of your creative insight. Photomanipulations are a popular thing too and it's a great thing in the areas such as commercial photography, but this is not photomanipulation, all I see is a properly finished piece of digital photography.
Must admit that I'm very confused about those circles behind the meteor, now that someone mentioned and I took a closer look! They look strange and I don't understand the phenomenon. But who's seen a real meteor from this angle, slightly from above? With their own eyes AND in a photograph?
John Colbensen  Riku. I really want to thank you for "defending" me here. I've been contacted by people all over the world askingme if this is a fake and if it's been manipulated. Quite honestly I'm a bit fed up by defending my own picture. I had this once-in-a-lifetime experience but nevertheless some people just want to ruin the moment. I do not claim this to be a meteor, but i do know that this object disappeared during the next 30 seconds after this pic was taken. Maybe it was an airplane and the angle made it "invisible". I do not know...I can not explain the rings but i can promise everyone that they are not made by my hand... Thank you Riku :)

This is overly edited. Everyone, please notice the perfect circles in the tail of the meteor. This is quite FAKE!
John Colbensen  Dear mr. Carlos Wilson. I must admit that at first I was angry with your statement that this is a fake. But clearly you are not capable of seeing fake and reality as two different sides. I have entered this image in some competitions and in most cases I had to send the RAW file as evidence. So mr. Wilson, I beg you to look more into cases before you make yourself look stupid again. Do you really think I would have made perfect circles in the tail? Really? Overly edited? Do you refer to the saturation? This was a once in a lifetime moment for me so don't ruin it by playing an idiot! And I have NEVER concluded that this is a meteor ! If you took your time and actually read what has been written in all the comments here, you might understand that your comment here is quite a farse!

I dare say, you're going to get many people to join 1x just so they can comment on this magnificent photograph. It was featured by AmazingPics on Twitter. I don't remember ever flying so high in a commercial aircraft to be able to see the curvature of the earth...that looks like something 70,000 feet or higher. Thanks for your inspirational photography and introducing me to a remarkable website filled with remarkable photography.
John Colbensen  Now you made me speechless for a while there... Just as you don't get this wrong. The altitude was far from such hights as you suggests. The curvature came from the use of my 10.5 mm fisheye.
I didn't know it's been presented on Twitter. I was never asked :)
The photographers on this site are amongst the best photographers in the world IMO. And I agree with you 100 % that this is a remarkable website.
Finally, thank you for a warm comment that will keep me snapping :) And by the way...welcome to the site :)

Probably one of the best photographs I have ever seen! As others said... speechless.
I do have a question... What country is below? Also what is the light. The moon?

And last... What lens did you use? I want one...
Benjamin Jung  "Also what is the light. The moon?"

It's only the sun and because of its brightness the rest of the image is underexposed. That's why the sky looks almost black (like outer space).

@John Colbensen:
I think the image would look even better with a properly exposed sky.
Great use of the fisheye anyway and a wonderful scene you captured there.
John Colbensen  Now that was some strong words Valdor :) I'm extremly flattered and very cheerful ... As for your questions : The country below is Denmark and what you see is the sun (bright bugger) . The lens used is a Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 DX. A fantastic lens for its use...recommend it highly ;)

An amazing picture. Stunning. The streak in the sky that looks like the vapour trail from another plane...is it a scratch on the window catching the light (the trail itself is out of focus so presumably much closer to the lens). The diffuse light around the sun I guess is from the plane window (don't they ever clean them properly?!)
Benjamin Jung  The trail is not out of focus. Sometimes condensation trails from airplanes turn into a trail of little circles. I have pictures of it taken from the ground (no smudged airplane window in between to make it OOF).
John Colbensen  It might be a trail from another plane, honestly I don't know. It is NOT a scratch on the window but I suspect the out-of-focus part is there because of the window shape or something that was smeared on the window. This picture is 1 shot only and i did no hokus pokus with it. You are most certainly right about the diffused light around the sun. That was pretty annoying really, but it was on the outside,so what could I do ? Thank you for taking so much time with this picture Marcel :)

This is, as others have said, simply amazing. This is from an airplane and is a meteorite, correct?
John Colbensen  Hi, and thank you for your comment Clyde. Yes,this is taken from an airplane. The altitude was somewhat higher then what I'm used to (and I fly alot) so I got a great view.Your second question is hard to answer though. To me it seemed to be a meteroite because of the angle it moved, but then again I don't really know. maybe it even was another airplane? I can't really tell 'cause i couldn't follow it with my eyes long enough to see what it was.I've tried to blow up the RAW-file but it gives me now answer.Sorry :-)
