Synaptic Haze

I'm quite struck by the similarities seen in natural patterns. Take these trees for examples and how they quite accurately resemble either a synaptic web or vascular system.

I can't help but ask: "What are the meta-patterns at play and how are these consistently replicating and scaling themselves throughout nature?"
