I like your work, but those white borders are really spoiling my enjoyment, especially with your low key shots. The eye goes to the border and stays there. You must have put some thought into this and I'm sure others before me have mentioned this. Most of your OE portfolio has these broad white borders.
I wouldn't mention it if I didn't like your work.

So what's your rationale?

In all friendliness and with admiration for your work.
Tim  Hi King, thanks for the feedback.

To be honest, it's never been mentioned before! However that isn't to suggest that I intend to disregard your views, because I think you may have a point. How would you have framed this image, or would you have left it completely alone in that respect?

My rationale is simple - many of my shots are dark (either literally or in terms of mood) and I feel that the border prevents the impression that the image may be fading into the background. However I may now reconsider this approach if you'd be willing to suggest a better alternative. Thanks!
King Douglas  Hey, Tim. I'm pleased that you chose not to take offense. I really like your work. I had three magic trick images posted today, each shot against a dead solid black background. I knew they would just float around in the OE background, so I included a 2-pixel dark gray border. Take a look.

By the way, I *love* low-key images. What works especially for me is when the subject is the brightest part of the image yet the subject is still low key, just brighter than the surroundings. I don't like to have my eye drawn away from the center (i.e., the subject) of such images, and that's the reason I commented on your broad white borders.

Oh, and I'm "old school." Explains a lot.

Cheers,
King
Tim  Hey, you were just offering your opinion, so I couldn't possibly take offence! In any case, I'll look more closely at how I border my online images in the future. Many thanks.

Tim, you are the master of composition. Great POV, an excellent picture. Hope your wellies didn't to too mucked up. Just curious, tripod or hand-held?
Tim  Wow, it's very kind of you to say so!

The shot was hand-held in very low, morning light (at ISO 1000) and unfortunately my boots were as mucked up as it was possible to get... :)

ship graveyard so photogenic, but you need the eye... and you certainly got it!
Tim  Thanks Stephane!

I'm really glad this made it. I love the rich tones and the "in your face" feel of the boat.

cool Tim, I like the production of this which seems to support the abandoned nature of the shot. mal
