Phyllis darling, thank you for this Christmas gift. I officially love this woman now, even if I don't know her or plan to get to know her. Who could not want that kind of enthusiasm while..no matter what you're doing! Even if she doesn't mean it, and it's just a ruse. Wouldn't be the first time.

Now I'm intrigued. She was either stung by 'Hunts with Cameras' for a shoot, or is a pretty good shooter herself making fun of Hunts with Cameras. Or perhaps just a comedian trying to have some fun. In any case, this is a very creative woman, and I think we need to offer her an invitation into our cult, er, association.

Okay, some ideas...

1.  Charge more to live in the USA. Lots more, to those with money. ie much higher taxes.

2.  Take up a policy of  Euthanasia.  Under this new model all those over 65 should be put  down. They worked, they had their families they did their part, and now it is time to let go of them. Grandparents are nice but not necessary.

3.  Stop all payments to those who are in any way disabled and unable to care for themselves. I propose sending them to countries who actually want to care for people with special needs - ie..Swedan, Finland, Germany..and others in Europe.

4.  Those who don't work should not eat, nor receive any subsidy to live.  If you are poor, well you had your chance like everyone else.  The founding fathers said 'to pursue' happiness not to receive it. And we can put them in prisons until they waste away.

Now number One takes in more money and numbers 2, 3, and 4...use up almost half the federal budget..So..We will have surplus in a few years once these services are no longer available.

Any surplus should be given to those with the most money because clearly they know how to handle money. They can divide it up between themselves.

Let me know if you want to implement my plan, I need to say goodbye.

I am feeling fortunate. Managed to get CS5 at 80% discount last year because I have an association with an University in London. However, I also use Silver Effex to tone my images, and with a recent upgrade to Lion (Mac) SE1 stopped working, so I had to purchase SE2. There were some password issues, and tonight I received a complimentary issue of SE2. Gratis. Downloaded and working with CS5/Lion. Bless those Germans.

Steve, do you use AF, much or ever? If not then I would recommend the Ai-S 50mm f1.4. I have one and love it, but I use manual focus virtually all the time. The manual focus rings on D series lenses are crap. Skinny and very short throw. I have the 85mm AF-D and virtually can't use it in manual focus. AND, the D's (at least the 3 I have) are noisy when in AF. But never used a 50 AF-D. I only have the 85, the 60 Micro and the 20mm. The only one that can be used in manual focus is the 60 Micro.

Basically Af except in low light situations where the AF isn't hitting well. Those older MF lenses are actually in the same price range as the new onesn they look great and I'll check one out before I make a move. What I'm looking for is the 85mm 1.4 (which I own)... same vibe, feel, contrast, sharpness etc. BUT wider. Not sure it exists... but I'll make some trade offs.

Phyl - I saw the new grey market one... either way, it's probably fine but when you buy over the Used Counter, they take care of you quite well if there's ever an issue... I live in walking distance, that's a big thing and I have had to go back and forth with other gear... it a priceless covenience, since I can't deal with the mail... time thing.

BTW... I don't know why I give a damn but the 50mm G and a few other versions seemed a bit soft, at least compared to the 85. Such a minimal gripe and I'm not sure why sharpness... or hyper sharpness is still an issue with me but I can't shake it.

Posted 3 months ago
If you have the 85mm AF-D and like it, then you will be happy with the 50mm AF-D, your trade off's will mostly be in slight contrast and sharpness (depending on aperture). The 85 will sharpen up a stop or two before the 50 I'd judge, especially if you're looking all the way out to the corners.

Just curious.
Do you mean because you live in NYC - sin city -  where packages cannot be left when you are not home...and then you have to go to the Post Office and wait on long lines to get it? :))

One advantage of living here in the real America..is that not only do they leave the package - but they will not under any circumstances take a tip. I had culture shock when i first got here.

Anyhow it has to be fun to wander around B & H. I would probably go into a trance like state and have to be removed by force.

Phyl -  Why don't I like the mail thing. well, I hate lines for starters and I rarely have postage stamps, which is irrelevant (for large package shipments) but it serves as a mental block. Don't try to unravel that one. Some things... many things in my life make no sense. I also like going down to B&H... I suppose if many people could they would. I mean, it's a cool place to have at your disposal and a great way to deplete a bank account. I also go there with gear questions, kinda the same way people use Google but with one-on-one Pro's to solve issues. Not bad.

Yep, I worked at Telezign on the second floor of National Video Center for @5 years. There were about 5 small shops that were loosely a part of the parent but mostly independent. I've seen pic's of the new building going up there. There's a FB group of former employees.

Come to think of it, J&R might have been the place with the aroma.

Hi Steve,
Just to chip in my thoughts on this one. I have the same, 50mm 1.4 D, and it is a marvelous tiny lens that does wonders indoors. I am using it on a D300s (DX crop) and I presume you will put it on your D700 (FX). It would work very well for the street stuff you're doing.
The only "complaint" I have is the quality of the bokeh; at intermediate diaphragm openings it'll give this pentagonal bokeh.
The newer 50mm 1.4G is supposed to be much better here. 9 diaphragm blades compared to 7 and they're also nicely rounded, such that the G-lens is giving much nicer rounded bokeh over the whole f-range. I have held both lenses side by side, and the new one looks and feels better as well.
If that is not a concern to you, I am sure the D-version will do wonders for you. It is a very nice lens.
Best regards,
Frédéric

Posted 3 months ago
Should have been septagonal bokeh (7-sided) of course.
And, you might also have a look at Thom Hogan's review of the 50 1.4 G, where he is comparing this one with the 1.4 D and the 1.8 D: http://bythom.com/Nikkor50AF-Slensreview.htm

Thanks Guys...When I first asked about a good place to buy photo equipment on line - way back now - B & H was recommended...and until now I was not even sure that 42nd Street was still around...

I really like the way the top photo on the landing page is now being changed on a regular basis.  That reptilian image yesterday certainly made me sit up and pay attention, and the snail today is wonderful. Rotating the photos adds a new dimension - "what will greet me today?"  :-)

I have the 1.8 which I don't love but I think this is what the Doctor ordered. Now, talk me out of it.... Like
The "this" in the quote turned out to be an old Nikon 50mm 1.4s..  made from as far back as 1988 (disc.around 1990). One of the first auto-focus lenses Nikon made and for it's age seems to work fast and in fact, faster than the 50mm 1.8 (Nifty 50) I unloaded, in trade.

Well. now that you mention it....

Don't let them (the tornadoes) force you into moving to CA. You know we are ALWAYS shaking and rolling here with the earthquakes.

In case you don't remember, I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area...I know from earthquakes.

However, I've never seen a tornado, although I've lived in Texas for 40 years and have kept my eyes open.

I was born in Pomona, California, in 1944.  But a tornado played a very significant role in my family when around 1930 a tornado ripped through Bethany, Oklahoma, killing my father's pregnant wife and leaving my father and eldest (half) brother severely injured.  My father later married my mother, who had helped nurse him back to health, but his little family was split up and traumatized.

My father's eldest daughter went to live with her grandparents and never re-integrated into the new family.  My father's new wife never established a loving relationship with his injured little boy--injuries that would last a lifetime.  The leg that was crushed in the tornado 80 years ago and left my brother with a limp all his life was finally amputated just before last Christmas.  It's a long, sad story.

The trauma that began with that furious whirlwind persisted, grew and filtered down to affect my life and the lives of my sisters and brothers and even affected my relationship with my own mother and father.

I'd like to see a tornado from a distance.  I would like to see that terrible thing that so damaged my family so long ago.

This stories, written by life, and told by empathetic and experienced elder people are what our youth nowadays miss.

They tell and teach so much.

Thanks so much for this story King, and from me too greetings with warmth

Thank you, King. Your story made me cry.

I grew up in Norman, OK, and in that time saw several tornadoes track along the South Canadian River. But, no one in my family or close to me was in any way affected. Ever.

Thank you for today - that is all I know to say.

We lived for 3 years in Norman, OK. There was a really small tornado once and we ignored the siren, not knowing what it's about. No damages then but in a couple of years after we left the neighboring town has been rendered flat...
