For me the most interesting site on (new) equipment remains www.dpreview.com. Very in depth tests and comparisons. And also quite a lot user forums discussing specific cameras and where those users exchange their opinions.

BTW, I would not buy a new camera type the first two to three months after introduction. By that you avoid the start up issues, often linked to a new equipment or software bugs linked to the new features.

Really, how often does that happen? And really, do you think Canon - which makes plenty of money from the lenses you won't buy if your camera doesn't work - won't take care of you if minor glitches pop up? Go buy your camera; every month you wait just means photos you won't take with it. Kinda like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I completely agree with Martin. Especially as this camera will probably be quite hard to find at the beginning, so the earlier you order one, the earlier you have chances of actually getting one. I'm also pretty confident that any start-up glitch will be fixed by firmware updates or recalls if it's really a big deal (but I think/hope canon learned their lesson with the MkIII AF issues). So my advice is to go ahead and buy it, if you're convinced it will make a difference to you (and man, does it look like a sweet piece of gear! Had I got enough money for it, I would perhaps even consider switching to evil Canon).

I've been waiting for the D700 for some time now, was planning to pick one up on my next trip to the US in October. But the new Canon 5D Mark II is really making me think about moving over to Canon. Coming tests will of course have great impact on my decision...

Well, I 'll have to say I did dream about that camera last night. I think I'm more excited about the video! I've been creating some pretty fun/spooky short movies lately and that camera is so cool. Thanks for the input.

Check out this link Angela

These guys are professional, and they say it delivers far better than Sony's HDV and Panasonics similar system. Those systems are very much used for broadcast. Expeditions, Underwater etc. Last time I met people from National Geographic they carried HDV..

At the moment I feel sorry I switched from Canon to Nikon 10 years ago..

There are many reviews. One (from the controversial Ken Rockwell) www.kenrockwell.com goes into quite a bit of detail and is full of his opinions. He does favor Nikon but the review is worth reading.

A friend of mine bought one. While I prefer the Nikon line due to the way the controls work and the look and feel I will say that if you want to print large photographs there is nothing that can match this camera for under $3,000. I definitely feel that it is better than Sony.

Of course the D3x is better but it is also 2.5 times the price and until the D700x is released this is the only game in town. Even after the D700x, the price may not be competitive with Canon.

Rockwells big beef with the 5DII is he feels that the jpg processing is too strong and while he does not especially like to shoot raw he does recommend it for this camera. If you do shoot raw, according to Ken you should get similar results as the D3x can get right out of the camera.

Angela I have the 5D & the 1D MK 3. The 5D is a hybrid of the two with video capabilities & a bigger file size 21mp versus 13/10mp. The 5D is an excellent machine light very managable & image quality is incredible (see my latest published image). Downside is the LCD but I rarely use it for anything other than the histogram. The 1D has the new sensor faster burst rate not full frame but is equally impeccable. Looking at the 5D MII I held one & used it last week for about an hour its light the LCD screen is incredible the images are exceptional & noise performance is outstanding. It benefits from the 1D sensore & other features like performance on rendering white detail. I fully recommend it. In fact if you check out the sites many are doing a deal with the 24-105 L lens & if a the UK deals are anything to go by you are getting a fantastic deal the lens normally sells for £900 in the UK & the deal is £2550 for the kit! (I bet Canon are about to come out with a 24-105 2.8 L Lens).

Of course I am biased but the comparison thing is natural my running partner has the D3 which is a fine machine also though his has been back 3 times to Calumet! The banding issue & black dot issue with the Canon I cannot speak too but I heard its a an issue & very high iso in rare exposure situations but check it out on http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp as a good as any site on machine reviews.

Angela note an error the new 5D does not have the same sensor as the 1D it in fact uses the same processor. Apologies. Also there is a 5D MK11 "preview" on ephotozine that may help.

The 5D Mark II and the 50D have nearly the same specs except for the sensor size (and so the pixel size). Is the 5D Mark II worth more than twice the money? I am just so tempted to buy me a new camera and the choice is betwen the 5D Mark II and 50D. Is the noise on the 50D really as annoying as many tests state?

The 5D mkII is the best buy I've made in a long time! It has its flaws like any "machine" but it's a great camera.

Also the 50D and the 5DmkII are in two completely different leagues...

I dropped mine during Amsterdam Calling from shoulder height onto concrete.
....no. I did not want to see if it can bounce:)
Few scratches but seemed to work perfectly afterwards, however, still had it checked over by a Canon lab...no problems reported.
So it is certainly as durable as the brochure says.

Great Camera - loads of fun and plenty of detail. Loved it - but it is to fragile for my travels. The housing is fine but the sealing is not. Switched back to Nikon using the D700 in favor of a more rigid body and sharpness even at full open aperture. Something I missed using the 5dmkII where I had to stop down always.
But it definitely has a close to perfect sensor which I adored. The AF on the other side did not satisfy me. It was weak especially if the light was not to good anymore.

dxo labs rates it very well. highest or second overall canon i think. if you already have the $$ and the "L" glass i would say go for it.

nevermind. someone brought up an old thread.
