Apologies if this has been discussed; I couldn't find a thread about it.

My husband cannot import RAW or DNG files into Lightroom 1.4. He gets an error message that they are in an unsupported color mode. He's shooting raw, same as me, and I switched all his settings on the camera to default.

i'm using the same camera, same version of LR, but I have no problem. The only difference is that he also has Canon Image Browser software installed on his computer. (and he's using a newer laptop, which shouldn't matter).

any ideas on what is causing this problem? The canon image browser software WILL upload the photos. LR will not.

It seems that people reporting this problem has not used a version of Lightroom that supports the camera they have. Updating LR has solved the issues. What camera and version of LR gives you this problem? But it seems strange since you say you use the same camera and version of LR without problem...

I'm not a Canon shooter myself, but remember there where issues with LR and sRaw files (raw files @ lower resolution).

Anyway, even if you have the same version of LR, you may have another version of ACR - which might also explain why you can import files on one computer and not on the other.

The only time I had a similar message was trying to import HDR Tiff's.

Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is only used if you make raw conversions with Adobe Bridge/Photoshop. Lightroom does not use it. It's the same raw conversion engine included in Lightroom and ACR, but you do not need ACR installed/upgraded if you use Lightroom. You update the raw convertion engine in Lightroom by updating Lightroom itself.

When Adobe comes with new raw support for new raw-file formats and camera models, they release a new version of ACR for Adobe Bridge/Photoshop users AND a new version of Lightroom for the Lightroom users.
