Sharpening question and Lightroom
Posted 2 years ago
The people who use Lightroom probably know that it has two ways you can sharpen.

The first is in the Develop-module, it is like the unsharp mask of photoshop.
The second way is the output sharpening in either the Export or Print-module.

Usually I don't use sharpening in the Develop-module, I just use output sharpening. This works fine for me.

I am interested in your experience regarding Lightroom and printing and why you do it that way:
1. Do you only sharpen in Develop?
2. Do you only sharpen in output?
3. Do you use both?

3. because Nikon RAW files are by default soft - to me. I actually sharpen - through a preset - when I import the files. The second sharpening is done for output and it's different for screen/print/... I really like the final result when I use a low or sometimes standard sharpening in export (output).

I do only use the output sharpening and it usually stays at 'low'. It works great most of the time but sometimes it seems weird and photoshop does a better shop on those photos. I do sometimes use the sharpening tool in develop module on a specific subject with a brush.

OT! I don't use Lightroom, but I have recently purchased CaptureOnePro5 for RAW conversion. I have been very pleased with the quality of the images it produces, in particular its default NR and sharpening. I find these settings make the work of editing the TIFF file easier and more successful. For printing, I then use Nik's Sharpener Pro 3, Output Sharpener to very good effect. So, although not in LR, I do presharpen in a RAW converter, and resharpen for the particular output mode at the end of PP.

It's a good question, because I just started to use LR and to me a lot of things are not clear. If I use Develop sharp so it gives too much of sharp. Yes, I'm sure that it because of my fault... I will observe the answers... :))

There is already a default sharpening setting, so my photos also have a default sharpening applied before I export them. So in a way I am also at 3, but I don't do anything special.

Do you use one of the default presets that come with Lightroom or have you made your own? How do you avoid that output sharpening doesn't make the photo oversharpened?

Does that give you good control over the outcome of the print? I guess it has also to do with experience in knowing what is too much.
