Small Laptop
Posted 2 years ago
Hi
I was wondering of anyone could offer some advice about the new small laptops that are around. I have a laptop but it is not good for travel - size and weight. I am wanting to buy a small, light notebook to travel - internet, but mainly to download photos. I intend to use an external hardrive for storing the files (and probably a smaller back up drive as well). My question is, I don't think the basic ones (10") that have just 1G Ram would be OK for downloading raw files after a day shooting. There are a couple (11" ) that have 4G. Some do't have DVD facility but I didn't think that was such a problem. At the moment I'm hung up on the ram size. What are others using???? Any advice???

I'm using a 12" Toshiba Portégé, 160GB HD, 2G Ram which I'm quite happy with. Weight about 1 kilo with DVD burner and all. Only problem is the back cover of the screen which is very soft. This has lead to some spots on the screen. And the price.. It was not a cheapie

I have also thought buying a small one, like the Samsung N120 ( cheap - about 250 EUR ), not for heavy works, only for using as a netbook and as a control monitor during or after shooting when being on the road as I hate these small screens at the back of the cam where each picture is looking sharp and later, on the big screen, you have a rude surprise ....

Hi Mihnea, yes, I am hoping I get some good advice. The little notebooks are great - but will they be right for my purpose. All the people I know who are using them are not photographers.

Hi Lars
I have been looking at a Toshiba - I think it is the Satellite T100/00D It's selling for $880AUD which is about double the entry level notebooks in Australia. So, I think it is on the dearer side - I would pay it IF I am convinced it is the best option.
It has 4 G ram. The smaller (and cheaper) Toshiba looks a good size but it has not enough ram - I think???
Thanks for your reply! I always admire your photos on 1.x

I won a Naneu Pro Military-Ops Sierra camera bag on a photo-tour which has space for a 12" notebook, so I'm playing with the idea to buy a small laptop too, because the combination of my urban gear and T61 is really unhandy. I was thinking about a LENOVO IDEAPAD. I'm really happy with Lenovo's Thinkpad version, won't buy anything else as lenovo (IBM)...
