Feather in Photoshop CS3...?
Posted 2 years ago
Hi guys,

A really quick question that has been bothering me for a while now. I cant seem to find an answer anywhere on the internet so I thought I would ask here. Hopefully some of you have noticed or know the answer...

Basically I used Photoshop CS for years and have recently moved up to CS3 where the feathering option has completely changed. The answer to my question could be really simple but I cannot seem to work it out, but when I feather in CS3, it feathers inwards, as apposed to outwards in the older versions. This basically ends up with the alterations I make feathering into the image and not out. Creating a rather awful halo effect.
An example would be, if I highlight a sky, feather and adjust the levels to make it brighter. I get a nasty light halo like feathering working into my image, where in the older versions, the lightness would have feathered out, being unseeable in the photograph if the feathering worked out of the images borders.

It really is a pain in the ass, and I would love an explanation, which I am sure exists and it probably simpler than I thought. Hope someone can help.

Thanks in advance

Once your selection has been made, the menu bar has a button that says refine edge. Press that and then you would choose expand which will feather the edge outward.
I think that is what you were asking?

You could try and reverse your selection and see what effect it has. Also press quick mask and you will see a red overlay. Go to filter gausian blur and select 1.5 You will see the effect on the edge. This is still supposedly superior to the refine edge method.
