Are L series Lenses needed with Canon 50D
Posted 2 years ago
Hi,
I'm currently debating on getting a Canon 50D.
However, I am worried that the 50D will require L lenses to obtain good shots.
I am not a pro, but I have taken pictures for awhile. Will regular EF lenses be good enough with the 50D?

Thanks for your help,

Jerry

99% of lenses are better than 98% of shooters.

Just get anything and shoot and save some cash and wait until you are more comfortable with your stuff and can identify a deficiency then target that deficiency with your next purchases...

L is just an advertising moniker - it doesn't mean anything in practice..

The short answer is, no you don't need L lenses. When choosing lenses, it's more important to make sure the specs fit your needs. If you're doing wedding photography, you probably need a low light lens or 2. For portraits and sports, a longer lens. And remember, just about all lenses are sharp at f/8.

Thanks for the advice guys, I have been reading reviews about how the saturation of the sensor on the 50D maybe too much and without a higher quality lens the pictures may come out fuzzy, or not as sharp.
This would be my first DSLR, I have been shooting with Canon SLR cameras for awhile now, and wanted to make sure that my EF lenses would be sufficient for the 50D.

I think you are wrong Mr. Ford, my L lenses are far superior to my other lenses!! Maybe they are a little expensive, but I feel they were worth the money :-)

But you do not NEED an L glass to make beautiful images :-)

You could always get a different dSLR as well. I have not heard great things about the 50D and the excessive pixel density. If you are used to film - then maybe a second hand 5D would be a better approach?

I wouldnt mind getting a 5D, however its just out of my price range. I was originally thinking of getting the 40D, but found a new 50D for few hundred more, which would be at the edge of my budget. The excessive pixel density is what i was worried about, a lot of people have been saying that it requires an extremely good lens for it to get good pictures.

Drop back to a 40D then. They all will be worth peanuts in a year or so anyway..... however if you can skip the focal length multiplier hassle I would. Surely 5D's have come down in price enough now?

Thats a good point. I am currently looking at both again. lol...Thanks for the help

How many pixels can you need anyway??

yes I agree, the 50d was not too much more than the 40d so thats why i was looking at them.
