Help me choose a Landscape location
Posted 2 years ago
All of a sudden I've got this weekend free, it took me by surprise as work committments changed fast. Now, I'm normally organised and plan a photo trip but I can't decide where to go all of a sudden, I'll be in Scotland so any suggestions would be appreciated.
How about a challenge, suggest somewhere or something in particular and I may take you up on it to see if I can produce anything decent...likely not though ;-))

Or if anyone is around and would like to share a photo location, let me know.

I guess Joshua Tree NP is out of the question?? A long trip from Scotland for sure, but one of my fav's!!

I've only been in Scotland once so far (hope to change that soon), but I really loved the view from midway loch up the tourist route on Ben Nevis. That's where my photo Elemental was taken:

On the way, you get a lovely sunrise on Glen Nevis. It might already be hard to get all the way to the top, but I think you should be ok to midway loch (especially since you kept your crampons and ice axe!).

Go to the local Pub, say you are one of the famous StreetPhotographers, and I'm sure they will pose accordingly for you!
Good luck! :-)

Alex, good suggestion and you have triggered a thought that I had to photograph the north west face of the Ben at Sunrise, a definate possibility for sure.

Lars, the go to the pub bit will already be done for sure but no way will I be taking a camera into such an establishment, there are somethings that are sacrilige.....!!

I think I'm formulating a plan......

Join the crowds on Lochnagar ;-) St Cyrus near Dunnottar is pretty but maybe not dramatic enough for you.

Cheers Jon, done Lochnagar a good few times now, have images from St Cyrus and Dunnottar castle published so thinking of somewhere different.

I'm thinking Assynt needs a good coat of looking at.........

Hi John,

here's a challenge ;-) - go to Tyninghame, a fabolous salt marsh, (just west of Dunbar), put on a tele-lens and get nice shoots of swimming redshanks at sunset! That's one thing I'd like to do at least :-)

Perhaps a more serious challenge might be Braemar, where you can hike up on the hills north of the village and get nice backlit sunrise scenes!?!

Johan, Tyninghame sounds an interesting challenge, I only have 200mm and I don't look like a special forces soldier in camoflauge so could be a problem. The Braemar option sounds feasible though as I know the area quite well already and is only 1.5 hours away.

Yep, for Tyninghame, you'd probably need at least 400 mm (prefereably with a tc) to do something serious.

Alright, here's my final challenge/suggestion: why not take the ferry to e.g. Isle of Barra and get some proper ocean action in your great landscape shots!

But, whatever you choose, hope you'll have a great weekend :-)

Landscape photography is my favourite form of photgraphy. It goes without saying that choosing the right location is of utmost importance! I recently went on a mountain biking trip to New Zealand and captured some breathtaking panoramic views on film. Can honestly say it's the best place I've been to so far for inspiration. Obviously just for a weekend NZ is quite a long way to go ;-)

John go to Staffa Island and shoot from within the cave its called fingal's cave from within. cheers . If you look hard enough you'll see the name wings on the face of a panel in side with a smiley face. Oh, take along your I pod with The Hebridges (Fingal's Cave), Op. 26: Overture by Mendelssohn. He was there once. Fingal's Cave inspired him to write the piece I mentioned.

I hope you go. after all you could has high to me, but kind of like a time portal. Leave a message I'll get when I go.
