Just saw a piece on the BBC website that suggests images by John Parminter are placed in this years competition if I am not mistaken.

See this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/8314105.stm.

Well done John.

Cheers Gerard, I wasn't going to mention it until after it has officially been announced on the LPOTY website but there have been news articles in the Sunday Times and now on the BBC. I may as well come clean and say I won two of the four adult categories and also have a Commended image, all will be published in the book and displayed in the National Theatre in London next month. There is reasonable prize money as well, if my wife hasn't already allocated it for her needs then I may think about a new lens.... ;-))

This won the 'Classic View'

This won the 'My View' category

and this one was 'Commended'

Thanks all, I didn't win the overall title of 'Landscape Photographer of the Year' though, can't be too fussy can I?... ;-)))

Congrats John, really well deserved! :)

Fantastic John....great news :))

Besides the chance to congratulate John for this well-deserved recognition, it was a good opportunity to browse through his photos again. Whichfor the viewer is always bordering to total escapism... and this was meant as a compliment.

CONGRATS!!

Big congratulations John.....however, in my broeks I feel that this is only the start of the big time for you. No doubt about that in my own mind. Amen.

Thanks Balazs and all. The results of this competition have only just broke but already there is heavy critisicm on various other photography blogs and forums on the validity of the winning and commended entries, some of it makes painful reading. It is quite sobering and it gives me a reality check on how I perceive my images. Most of the forums are critisicing images for lacking imagination and being too cliched or are all somehow the results of HDR. I'm not sure how to take it all really and I'm not sure if I'll be able to actually enjoy the benefits of winning some of the categories.
I accept that my shot of that mountain has been photographed by everybody but there isn't many folk who have an abandoned shopping trolley in their portfolio or have bothered to climb a mountain in the wind to catch the last light...
..and the assumption that they are all HDR shots brings a cold sweat over me, ooowww.

Anyway, I think I am thick skinned enough to ride out the storm... ;-))))

At least here I feel reasonably safe and immune from that harsh world they call photography out there...

No one ever takes results of such competitions for fair and just - except the winners. So enjoy these days and let'em howl. Besides - you're not the sort who would appreciate a pat on the back and much less in the need of it, but suffice to say that "a John Parminter landscape" has become part of the OE vocabulary, at least when talking among us...

HI John, big congratulations!! don't pay those negative comments any mind, they are spectacular photos! And haven't 1x rejections given you a stiff backbone for this kind of talk?? :-))))

Who's talking behind my back, who is it?? you'll tip me over that paranoia cliff you know...;-)) I'm OK with the opinions of others actually and it is quite good to see undiluted and raw views.

I don't think I'm that naieve to think that there will allways be diverse and differing opinions especially when it comes to the subject of whats good or bad in photography.

Now, all I need is a publication to cheer me up so pop along to screening and make me feel better....

Huge congrats John!! - btw, I'm glad that you are finally admitting to using HDR, it's about freak'n time! :)))))))

Congratulations John!

Take no notice of the forums John.

Better not to look at all. We used to have the same problem when I worked in hi-fi.

We'd work really hard to get an amazing sound at the shows beating systems at many times the price point and then all the anoraks would slag us off on the forums. Very disheartening, but we learned not to read them.
They were the kind of people who never bought anything any way.

We are all proud of you.

Cheers

Managed to full the wool over your eyes for this long though aye..??

Hey Kevin, I've just re-evaluated that D700 of yours, not only can it not take landscapes but it's pretty ineffective at taking any decent shots..........

....dar, dar..

;-)))

Thanks all for the vote of confidence,

Very well deserved John, your photograph currently has pole position on the BBC home page too!

Posted 2 years ago
Yes I have just seen the BBC front page.....fantastic well done !!! :)

Posted 2 years ago
Congratulations are in order, John, that was a well deserved award!

I have a similar "issue" with my landscape and mountain images, some people consider it as being too immediately beautiful, too spectacular, and I get comments to the tune of "nice image, but it has obviously been photoshopped" all the time (not here, though, which speaks volumes about this site). I usually don't even bother replying anymore, but if I did, I would say something like "This is what I do. The reason I am taking pictures is because the scene in front of me is so beautiful in the first place, and I want to share what I am feeling, which is awe. The reason my image is spectacular and beautiful is that the scene I was photographing was spectacular and beautiful, not because I used photoshop."

In short: please don't let those comments spoil the joy of having your work recognized in such a nice manner.

Thanks Alex, I'm rising above all the negative criticism and it won't spoil it for me, the £2000 in my back pocket makes me smile even more!!!

Congratulations John, a great achievement!

That type of comments say more about the ones writing them than about your photography... You know what you have done, how the images where taken and processed. It's good to hear that you will not let them get to you.

Thanks Thomas, if anyone is interested in the discussion that the images are generating here is the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/photoblog/2009/10/landscape_award.html

I'm just going away to dust off that Photomatix software and learn how to do HDR, I might win the overall title next year...

Congrats JP! I always really liked that shopping trolley one. Amazing what a couple of dreary, cliched HDR shots can achieve ;-)
Ignore the forum posters. You won and they didn't. nar ne nar nar. . .
Enjoy your achievement.

That's so good, I don't even know how to respond! I have a feeling that if we ever get the chance to sit down for a pint together it'll be a riot. Just don't sit there naked like that one pic you tried here before :)))))

Kevin, not only would I drink you under the table with our penchant for room temperature ale but you'd be left agast at my ability to reduce you to tears in the art of sarcastic wit and banter...and I wouldn't even take my clothes off.

Can't wait for the challenge..

Thanks all, the closing date for entries for the 2010 competition is errrrr, well today. I've entered my images and fingers crossed for a bit of success this year as well. I think this is one of the UK landscape competitions worth entering as overall prize is a useful £10,000 with category winners winning £1,000.

:)

Great news!!! Love John's work, very inspiring, and what I hear he makes those shots with old used lenses...:)))

John congrats these are deep images. I'll open a bottle of champagne for you..To night

John, there is no doubt that your photography has something very special! It is above the landscape photography that i usually see in magazines and i can feel a deep work from your side on every important aspect: light, composition, colour, place, season to shoot etc! Do not let comments disturb all these! I expect some more from you...:) Mihnea

Very late to the celebrations.

Congratulations John, great shots.

HDR is one of those techniques that I know can be used well, but for the most part isn't. In your case it has been used very well indeed. Enhance and compliment the image rather than detract and overpower.

The comments on the BBC are a good laugh.

My Ged, they mostly look like bad Victorian watercolours, knocked out by inmates of a lunatic asylum.

You're on to a good thing if your art gets such high praise, as we all well know, all the best artists are as mad as hatters. ;-)

Good luck in this years competition.

Errhh, I don't use HDR Jeremy, my point was that my images were lumped in with the ones that used HDR and we all kind of got tarnished with the same brush. There was a lot of negative criticism about all the winning images looking over processed, saturated and bad examples of HDR.

Anyway, we'll see how I do this year, I've gone very specific and entered almost exclusively mountain shots, I think these are my strengths.

Like a lot of us, John uses the old-school HDR method--filters screwed onto the lens! One of these days, we'll get John to try the old-school color color control method--slide film!

Its kind of you to say Patricia and thanks for the support but there are plenty of others who have fabulous and inspiring images for me both here and outside 1X.
