The problem... is that you cannot photograph (people) like that anymore... and if you still do, you cannot show, publish or expose your photograph without the risk of a lawsuit... that's so sad.

O so true. Now you need to ask in advance and even make them sign a model release :o))

I see photographs with subjects like this everyday here and on other sites. I doubt very seriously that many, if any have releases???

What do you mean Remo, you don't?? They are all over the place! Note that I did not say I see photo's of his quality, just that I see photo's with this everyday type of subjects. Was not meaning to compare quality, just subject matter. How many times do you think Robert or Richard ask their subjects for releases???

clyde, i didnt mean i dont see them here and on other sites everyday, what i mean is i never ask people if i can take a picture of them. i give them a chance to talk to me after, i just dont run away and keep eye contact to them.

I like the photos a lot, they could be a bit more original maybe. i think taking pictures of people used to be more easy in times when cameras where more unusual on the streets.

Nice shot indeed....but I agree with many here that you can't really take such photo nowadays, may be in some places. If I try and take some photos of people down town in my city I might end up with a broken cam...lol (it might be ok if you are a tourist though).

I also agree with Remo, if you ask people first then most of the moment and magic is lost, from natural it becomes plain.

For photographs like these in public places you don't need any releases in most places for most uses (mainly excluding advertising). Some countries do have laws that allow a right of image even in public places, such as France. In the US, Finland and the UK, for example, you are not expected to have privacy if you are in a public place. I am not sure of the case in Germany, Italy or Spain.

I agree that these photographs are inspirational... but I dont understand your title, Bob.... now this is what I call photography.
Perhaps you meant street photography.. or classic photography.
They all have a classic, dated, historical feel to them. I hope you are not saying that street photography is dead in that only motif worthy of what you would call... photography... is the art of past times?

Hi Ian.

Good to see you back.

The emphasis in the title should be on 'I'.

What I meant was, this is what 'floats my boat'. Nothing deeper than that.

I love 'street' and I just set up a social network a few days ago based on it should you be interested.

Anyone is welcome to join.....

Very like Tony Ray-Jones; same period, same sense of fun; I think its important to hide the message behind some sense of wit, sometimes.

here in Norway there are few laws against photographering in public.
that's the whole idea of "public". if you don't want your picture taken, don't hang around in public ;)

the only law is that you need a concent/release-form if you take a picture and the main emphasis of the shot is on one particular person (meaning there is only one person in the picture).

Sure you can. You can photograph them now and publish them in 40 years. Just like what the web site is doing. And, I don't mean to criticize the pictures, they are great, but a large part of the appeal is that they document a gone era.

Oh, pictures are really interesting. Each of them has to say something. In some I found deep message. Discution here also is interesting. To me it's also difficult to take pictures in public places. I feel like steeling the moment from person... But I have to agree that without courage I will never do such pictures. You know, I studied history and I know that such pictures are perfect source of information. Thanks.
