Street shots and cars
Posted 3 years ago
Hi everybody !

I have a little problem with street photography because, where I live, it's very difficult to take photos without cars because there are cars everywhere !
I think cars are problems in a photograph because it's often disturbing for the viewer and often not very nice to see.
Do you have some tricks to avoid this problem ?

Thanx !

Get closer to the people, more narrow DoF to separate the people from the background, go to parks, markets, etc. where there are no cars, etc...
This wisdom from a landscape photog...

A photographic essay on cars ruining street shots: motion blurs, cut off heads, exhaust fumes covering the scene, and those horribly coloured renault twingos. ;)

You think you have too many cars?

Come to Beijing and try that on the size... something crazy like 20,000 new cars a week come onto the roads....

Tricks? Put the picture in a box for sixty years. That old fashioned boxy 2008 Ford Escalade with 32inch rims put a smile on your face and remind you of the good old days.

i'm new here, guys, but thanks for the discussion about my image. a suggestion for julien about his problem with cars: point your camera away from them. they can't be everywhere. and if you cannot do this, use them as part of your composition. as with any street shot, you often have to accept what's in the frame, or miss the shot. or, accept that the shot isn't as good as you'd like it to be. it sounds simple, but really that's the nature of this type of photography. if it were easy, everyone could do it. but truth is, 99 out of 100 shots may be mediocre at best, and utter failures at worse. keep shooting. that 100th shot will come along eventually.
ps: i lived in beijing for nearly a year, and cars were not a problem. if the shot required, i would include them. if not, i excluded them from my frame. but the air quality was another thing altogether!!!

Cars are part of life. A huge part of all our lives ( except Rui, goats are a huge part of his life it seems, but luckily they can't drive. . . ) Use and include them. Why pretend they are not there? Especially in a street shot, as street is supposed to be the most 'real' and 'authentic' genre. Maybe there were fewer cars in HCB's day but you are here now and so are the cars!
So I guess I'm saying, in the nicest possible way, "Live with it, Dude!"

When I was there, there was hardly a car on the road--just a few buses, taxis and military/government vehicles. One had to watch out for bicycles, but the merry jingling of bicycle bells is one of my fondest memories of Beijing 1980.

Tricks... well if they are on the Street.. then shoot them too!
I understand that sometimes is mind wrecking, but believe me in 30 years your photos will make a difference...

Absolutely. Right now it you get critique about those mundane distracting cars in the composition but in 30 years they will be of high interest.

Is there a 1x deep freezer where we can store them for the time being? :-)

As for street pictures and cars. If they are there why try to exclude them .... ?
If you want to make street pictures like studio images, why not take the shortcut... ??

Cars are part of street life. In olden times they were not, but nostalgia ain't what it once was.

First reply was spot on, get a 35mm lens or a 24mm, get close in; put whatever you are taking a photo of in the front row and the cars wont be a problem.
