Retrieving lost files

Any Mac users out there that can help?

I just bought a new hard drive & in transferring my photo files from my iMac hard drive I appear to have inadvertently deleted at least 1 whole days shoot!

Is it possible to recover those files?

Any help would be appreciated in advance of going to Apple.

Thanks.

Depending on the file system, you might be able to recover something. The most important thing is to stop writing anything to the disk where the deletion happened. You should unplug it right away and not touch it anymore until you give it to someone who can try to recover your data. If you have your OS on it, then shut down your computer. Even then, there is no guarantee you'll get your data, but this should at least give you the best chances.

Thanks Alexander all this happened 3 days ago & I have been writing stuff to the device since!. I think its a lesson learnt. There were about 400 images some precious but not all! I never backed up files prior to getting the 2TB EH but now it is set up to run everyday. I can deal with it!

If your disk is not too full, you may still have some chances to recover things, but you will need to hire someone to do it, and this is usually very expensive. If not, well, sorry about your loss, then. It happened to me a few days ago, and it sure isn't fun...

I don't know if this software would help you at all, but I have had good luck with it on a number of occasions. I think it works with hard drives as well as memory cards. You can download the software in demo mode and if it finds the files, you probably have to buy it to get any usable files restored, but I think it's relatively inexpensive.

Good luck! It's very annoying when things like that happen and no matter how organised you are, I guess it does happen from time to time.

Let me know if it works.

Did the files go to the thrascan? Then you can just draw them back.

Thanks Sarah I will check this out.

Anna yes they did. I was in the process of recovering usable space on my iMac hard drive. I had nearly 300gb of photo files & no space left so I brought a 2tb external hard drive & moverd everything from the iMac into the EH. In the process I cleaned up & thats when I think I lost this one days shoot. Otherwise I have no idea where it could be. I searched both hard drives & cannot recover the files. They could have gone to trash I just don't know. I will check out Sarahs software & see how I fare.

Thanks.

Gerard,

and buy a second external hard drive as a backup because as I understand, some of your images reside only on the external hard disk now. Have one external hard drive for the daily backup permanently attached to your computer and the second one for weekly or monthly backups can be attached on demand and stored at least at another room in the meantime.

I hope you get your files recovered.

Thanks Stephan I have now instigated this framework. I used to smile at the lengths some professional shooters went to to protect their master files (multiple hard drives located in secret vaults) & although I only lost a handful of never to be repeated images it hits home that were this my main source of income I could have egg on my face today!

No Ben but thanks if my efforts with Sarahs option fail I may choose that route next. I am presently going through a recovery its amazing what it has thrown up! so far & its only half way through after 3 hours!

I don't have suggestions for retrieving your lost files, but maybe this thread will help you with a good backup strategie:

The files can usually be restored. When you "delete" a file it is not really deleted, it's more like marked to be overwritten. If it is not already overwritten it should be easy to restore.
I just restored my wifes photos from her memorycard using Sandisk Rescue Pro (don't know if that one can restore data on drives). She accidentally deleted all files from 6 weeks in the Philippines..
Back in MSdos (PC of course) days you could look up the files and see that the first letter in the filename of a deleted file was replaced by some funny symbol. Then, you could just replace the symbol with the original letter. I guess the same is the case now if you could see them. Even on Mac..
