How good is your quality?
Unlike many other photo sites, 1x uses professional labs, which print for photo exhibitions in galleries and museums. We are not using a standard solution, instead we have a personal intimate relationship with our selected labs, where every print is given extra time and care. To ensure top notch quality, the photo is first proofed by an 1x expert, proofed a second time by the staff in the lab and at last carefully inspected when finished printing. We print on real photographic paper using the latest state-of-the-art technique. We don't use inkjet printers at all, instead photos are exposed by lasers in huge, very advanced Lambda printers and chemically developed, much like traditional dark room developing.
Here's what one of our customers said: "The quality is absolutely upper class, compared to the fast suppliers in this genre. Colors are exactly what they are on my own display, the paper is good, quality convincing."
Is my online payment secure?
1x uses two respected companies for payments, Payer Financial Services and PayPal. No credit card numbers are stored on 1x servers and transactions are completely secure.
How long does shipping take?
Prints are shipped in rolls and delivered right to your doorstep, usually in less than a week and 2 weeks at the maximum.

Is there a limited edition print sales option?
Not at the moment, but we are planning to make a limited edition prints sales feature soon where you will be able to decide prices and sizes yourself. Later on, it will even be possible to print and ship them yourself on materials of your choice if you prefer that. Limited editions will not be exclusive to 1x so you can still sell the photo in other galleries, but you always have to keep track of how many copies you have sold in total, so the number of printed copies never exceeds the total number of copies in the edition.

Selection process
How does the selection process work?
When a photo has been sent to the curators it will first end up in a waiting queue. In the next step, one of the curators will transfer the image to a personal queue. The curator can select the image for publication immediately or decide that it doesn't fit in the gallery right away.
If the curator needs additional feedback, the image will be sent either to the other curators for further discussion or to a member vote, where 100 members vote on each photo. Members have the opportunity to write comments in voting, remember that any comments are not written by the official curators, because they lack the time. The voting result is helpful feedback for the curators, but it never determines the final outcome. The final decision to select a photo for the gallery or not is always taken by one of the curators.
What kind of photos are selected for the gallery?
We don't judge over good or bad. 1x is an online arts gallery and the curators select photos which fit their artistic vision for the gallery. We are looking for variation, originality, mood, story and technical quality. Variation and originality are very important, when a certain motif has been published many times, it will be very hard to get it published again. Always try to find a new creative twist when you photograph something, for example we have several different photos of the Eiffel Tower published, even though it's one of the most photographed landmarks in the world.
Grain, blur, cut arms and legs, tilts and other imperfections can sometimes enhance a photo, but there should always be a point to using a certain effect. The photos should be artistic, but they should still be photos, pure digital art is for other venues. Only 1/20 of all photos uploaded to 1x are selected for the gallery so don't feel down if one of yours are not, it doesn't mean it's a bad photo, just that it doesn't fit this certain gallery.
What kind of photos are not selected for the gallery?
Cliche motifs which we have seen many times before are usually not selected for the gallery unless they are truly outstanding. Some of these motifs are butterflies, dragonflies, ants, sunsets, piers, milky water, the person in the tunnel, the lonely tree, the fisherman throwing a net and the staircase. We rarely publish photos which fit better in a family album, like kids, pets and standard travel photos. Other motifs not rarely published are sculptures or other photos of someone else's art and overly commercial photos with obvious logos in them. Please don't upload any offensive material.
Where do I find the results on my photos from the selection process?
Go to "Account" --> "Photo directory" to see the status of your uploaded photos.
The selection process is taking a very long time. Is my photo stuck?
No, photos don't get stuck. It's just that certain photos more than others require a lot of discussion in the curator team whether it should be selected for the gallery or not. A decision is usually made in less than a few days, but up to three weeks is normal.
My photo was not selected for the gallery. Why is there no explanation provided?
With hundreds of photos uploaded every day, unfortunately the curators don't have the time to comment on all photos.Instead, we have provided a unique critique forum with especially appointed "senior critics" who give expert feedback on your work. There might be comments from the selection process, but they are always written by voting members, not the official curators.
Photos
How do I upload photos to the selection process?
To upload a photo, go to "Account" --> "Upload photos". When the photo is finished uploaded it will appear below in a section called "Not ready". Click on the photo to enter information about it and then click "Send to curators" at the bottom of the page.
What are the requirements for uploaded photos?
First of all you must be the photographer of all parts of your photo, using stock photos or computer 3d-rendering is not allowed. The file must be in jpg-format and smaller than 2 MB. The maximum width is 950 pixels and the maximum height 850 pixels. We recommend at least 800 pixels width for landscape oriented photos and 700 pixels height for photos in portrait format.
Borders are not allowed because they won't look good in our design. Copyrights, signatures or other text in photos are not allowed either, because they're too distracting. However if the photo is selected for the gallery we automatically add a copyright banner at the bottom of the photo.
How many photos can I upload each week?
As a free member you can submit one photo to the curators every week.
How do I edit the information about my photos?
Go to "Account" --> "Photo directory" and click on the photo to edit the information about it.
I have sent a photo to the curators by mistake. Can I delete it?
Once the photo has been sent to the curators it's no longer possible to delete it. As soon as a decision has been taken it's possible to re-upload. However if it was not published in the first place, it's not likely to be published on the second try if you haven't made major improvements.
I have improved a photo. Can I upload it again?
If you have made major improvements to a photo you are allowed to upload it again. However it must be the same image. Photos which were not selected for the gallery in the first place are rarely published on the second try. The feature is mainly intended for cases where a curator has left a comment that you for example should remove the borders and specifically asks you to upload the photo again. To re-upload a photo go to "Account" --> "Photo directory", click on the photo and click "Re-upload this photo".
How do I delete photos?
It's not possible to delete individual photos on 1x. It's like being published in a magazine, once printed photos are not removed. We don't delete non published photos either because we need to keep a history so the same photo is not uploaded twice. However if you need to remove individual photos because of copyright or personal reasons, send an email to support[at]1x.com with your request. If you delete your account all photos will be deleted.
Sharing photos
How do I share photos published on 1x?
You are not allowed to download, screenshot or hotlink photos on 1x, but linking to the page where the image is displayed is always encouraged! You can share the image on StumbleUpon by clicking in the box to the right below the photo, or make a thumbs up if someone already shared it. You can share images on Facebook by clicking the link: "Click here to share this image on Facebook". You can also indicate that you like a photo in your Facebook profile by clicking the Facebook like button directly on the 1x image page below the photo.
At the moment it's not possible to send eCards or send photos as links, but we plan to make a feature like that.
Feedback on photos and photo critique
How do I gain feedback on my photos?
Unfortunately the curators do not have the time to comment photos, because hundreds of photos are uploaded every day. There might be comments from the selection process, but they are written by voting members, not the official curators. Instead, take advantage of our unqiue critique forum, with especially appointed experts, senior critics, to develop your photographic skills. Another tips is to send a personal message to a photographer whose work you are interested in ask the how they are made. You will be surprised how willingly even famous photographers are to help you out.
What is the photo tutorials forum?
Besides photo critique we provide an excellent photo tutorials forum where our members describe in detail how photos are made, everything from the initial idea behind the photo to the post-processing and how it was received. They often include pedagogic diagrams of the set-ups used to take the image. This is a very good resource for getting inspiration and finding out how to take a certain type of photo. If you have any questions which are not covered by the tutorial, just go ahead and ask it right in the same forum thread or send the photographer a personal message.
Please go ahead and share how one or more of your own photos are made, it will be greatly appreciated by your fellow photographers. If you don't know what to write here's a guide with a set of questions to start with: 1x.com/forum/site-news/26321
Go to "Forum" --> "How to" --> "Photo tutorials" to find out more.
How do I submit a photo for critique?
Critique is give and take. The more critique you offer others the more happy people will be to comment on your own photos. To submit one of your own photos to critique your first need to comment on three other photos. The moderators make sure that all the posts in the forum are of a very high intellectual standard, make sure that you have read the guidelines for critique before you post in the forum. Go to "Critique" and click the link "guidelines for participating" in the message at the top.
When you have commented on three photos you are able to submit one of your own to critique. Click the button "Upload a photo for critique" at the top of the page. Before your photo appears in critique the post first has to approved by a moderator to make sure it fulfills all requirements of critique. Please keep in mind that the critique forum is not intended to finding out why a photo was not selected for the gallery, but a place to gain general feedback on your photos.
Critique is completely separated from the selection process, which means that you can upload any photo straight into critique, published, not published or a photo which has never been submitted to the curators. Free members are able to upload 2 photos for critique each week and paying members 5 photos each week.
What are the requirements for writing in critique?
Never hesitate to write in critique. Everyone's opinion matters. Even feedback from a beginner can be very interesting to a professional photographer, because most of the people who will watch the photo are not photography experts. The most important thing when you write in critique is that you explain why and how. Tell in detail why you like something about a photo and not just that you like it, or don't like it. Just saying that you like something is a nice compliment, but it doesn't help the photographer to develop. Please appreciate that this forum is solely intended for learning.
Also please keep in mind that critique is not intended for fining out why a photo was not selected for the gallery, but receive general feedback on photos. If you do not follow the guidelines for writing critique you might get suspended from critique for a limited period of time, several suspensions might lead to a ban from the forum. It's ok to write in any language, but please provide a translation in English as well.

All original source files for all parts of your photos must be photos taken by you and you are responsible for having all the necessary copyrights and other rights for displaying them on 1x.
Must I be the photographer of every part of my photos?
Yes, you must be the photographer of every part of your photos. You are not allowed to use stock images, creative commons images, someone else's work or computer generated material as part of your images, even if you have the right to do so, unless you have the written permission of the site owners.
What are the rules about editing my photos?
All parts of an image must consist of original photographic source files photographed by you, you are not allowed to use stock photos or someone else's work even if you have the legal right to do so, without written permission from the site owners. You are not allowed to use completely computer generated graphics in your photos, every part of your image has to start with a photograph. If a photo is a montage or contains serious editing it should be posted in the creative edit category and we appreciate if you leave a quick explanation about how the photo was made. Uploading a photo with a lot of editing to any other category than creative edit, unless it contains nudity and therefore should be posted in the fine art nude category, is considered a violation of the rules. If a curator asks how one of your photos is made you are required to answer truthfully and provide an original source file of the shot. When in doubt about the authenticity of a photo, the curators might chose not to publish it, so please provide an explanation if your photo looks edited or if you have done major editing, especially if it's not apparent. Writing that a photo is unedited or "straight from camera", when in fact it's not, is considered a serious violation of the rules.
What are the rules for writing photo comments?
Remember to always be friendly when you write something on 1x. Never write in anger or insult anyone, make sure to refrain from personal accusations and always use a polite language. When we comment on someone's photo we must be careful not to hurt their feelings, because photos are very personal. It's ok to point out things to improve in photo comments, but don't tear the photograph into pieces unless the photographer has specifically asked for serious critique. Remember to always write some encouraging words as well. It's fine to write in any language in photo comments, but it's always appreciated if you try to provide an English translation.
What are the rules for writing in the forum or on someone's wall?
When posting in the forum or on someone's wall it's very important to be friendly and polite because misunderstandings can easily happen on the internet, where we only communicate in a written language without tone of voice and body expressions. If you are writing because you are upset about something, it's better to wait a day or two, when you can view things in a more objective manner. Never write in anger, insult someone or make personal accusations.
Another very important forum rule is to stay on topic or the forum will be chaotic and confusing. If you want to discuss something not related to the topic, start a new thread instead of hi-jacking someone else's. Before creating a new thread, search the forum to make sure that the topic hasn't been discussed before, your question might already be answered.
In the forum it's not allowed to discuss individual decisions in the selection process, because someone's feelings are likely to get hurt those discussions tend to create a bad atmosphere in the forum.
You have to write in English in the forum, but it's ok to write in another language as long as you provide a translation in English.
What are the rules for writing comments in voting?
Comments left in member voting are anonymous, which can tempt some people not to be careful what they write under the cloak of anonymity. Comments are not anonymous to site crew however, except comments on a curators's own pictures. Because of the anonymity and that the photographer can not respond you have to be even more careful not to hurt somebody's feelings. When writing comments in voting, don't hesitate to criticize, tell what you think is wrong with the picture and how it can be improved, but remember to always write something encouraging as well. Make sure that comments are actually useful and will help the photographer to improve. Just saying "good" or "bad" won't help the photographer to develop. If you don't have any suggestions about how to improve the picture, instead tell how you interpret it or explain in detail what you like or don't like about it, which can be of great value to the photographer.
What are the rules for writing in critique?
In the critique forum it's utterly important and a strictly enforced requirement to always give actual useful critique. Like in voting if you have no idea about how to improve a photo, instead explain what you like or don't like about it and why, and tell about how you interpret the shot. Never write that something about the photo is just good or bad. Instead, always explain why you have a certain opinon and do so in-depth.
When you post your own images in the critique forum it's required to write a detailed description about what kind of feedback you expect, why you submitted the photo to critique and your own thoughts about the photo. Also it's a of respect not to thank someone who has taken his or her time to comment on your photo or not taking the advice into serious consideration.
A common problem in the critique forum is that someone posts not because they are interested in improving a photo, but because it wasn't selected for the gallery and now the photographer wants to hear how good it is. If one of your photos wasn't published it's a good idea to wait a couple of days before posting it to your critique to let some stem off. We understand that it sometimes hurts when one of your photos are not published, because it's personal, but please remember we don't judge over good and bad.
Don't post to critique to get photos published on 1x, but rather to gain general advice about how to improve the photo as much as possible, which in turn will probably lead to a higher chance of being published. Some photos just don't fit the gallery though no matter how much you improve them.
When submitting a photo to critique be prepared that it might be blow to pieces and never be angry when someone criticizes your work. If you can't handle that, if you don't intend to write actual helpful critique on others' photos or if you post just to get pats on your back, you will ruin it for the others who are interested in serious critique.
I feel discriminated or harassed. What should I do?
Every kind of discriminatory statements because of gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, political views or else and all types of harassment are strictly prohibited in all forms of communication at 1x. Also an official apology is expected to everyone who has been insulted or offended. Even if someone is offended because of a misunderstanding, it never hurts to apologize to make them feel better again. If the violator does not apologize or agree to change his/her behavior, it will lead to a ban from the community.
