Afghan girl, 50 years later

no she is not really the "Afghan girl" of course. Maria is an old and poor Mexican woman whom I met on streets of Taxco, a small mountaneous town in southern Mexico.

Although her deeply lined face shows the character of old age, her pouty expression has all grumpy energy of a small child not quite getting her way. A powerful blend.

I see in this portrait defiance against old age and dire circumstances, but yours is an alternative, and equally interesting interpretation, which actually could be closer to reality than mine. Of course after the shot is taken, reality does not matter much anymore (unless it is a photojournalism) :). ...Did you see a powerful and moving portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw09580/Wallis-Duchess-of-Windsor-Prince-Edward-Duke-of-Windsor-King-Edward-VIII ? One is led to interpret their expression as the consequence of their drama-filled life, but in fact Avedon snapped this shot right after telling them a tear-jerking story about a rabbit killed by a car or something equally silly.
